First of all, thank you Mike Unser for all of your continued efforts to educate and keep us up to date with current happenings in the World of coins. Just a heads up, a tiny typo occurs near the end of your report. Just a little, ole’ “e”
needed: “ Each of the four Main Innovation dollar roll and bag products showed sizable reductions”(Maine) Thanks again for all the data and information provided regularly here on Coin News!
It’s funny, Caliskier, because ordinarily that missing “e” wouldn’t have amounted to a hill of beans, but since “Main” can in this case be construed to denote “principal” that little “e” does make for a substantial difference in meaning. Good catch!
L&B gold is down 49. I wonder if the Mint is trying to resale returns with their recent reopening of sales.
It’s got the Remind Me button now!!
The infamous and notorious “Remind Me” button which will if you are lucky get you an email notice of the item being in stock again and if you are even luckier will mean that if you hurry to the site to pick it up it there will still be one left for you.
Kaiser, just don’t bother sending it in to get graded as it’s probably already been (and failed to attain a 70). I don’t send coins for grading, but I would hate to receive a coin with an obvious flaw.
Wise words to hear and sound advice to heed as is your wont, Craig.
I realize there have long been differences of opinion regarding this very issue here, REB, but my opinion remains that if the Mint can re-sell a return then it surely will.
I’m wondering if the Mint will accept a returned Lib/Brit (Gold) still sealed/unopened that I have. I’m NOT happy with the Mint opening sales back up after it was “SOLD OUT”!!!!!! I also would like to put my 2 cents on the dog coins. Nope, nope & nope! My wife and I have no kids but we have our two dogters (dog daughters), lol and they are our children! Our friends tell us that when they die they want to come back as a dog and they want my wife and I as there owners/parents, lol! We are truly dog… Read more »
Myself, I’m not sure I’d want to risk sending something back to the Mint this long after the return window has expired- especially something as valuable as a Lib/Brit gold. It’s going to cost $64 to insure it, plus the cost to mail and to get a signature confirmation. And there’s no telling what happens once it gets to the Mint.
Excellent point, Major D!
I’d be biting my fingernails until the refund appeared on my CC statement. Too much possibility of loss/theft. And if you’ve never dealt with a USPS insurance claim, count yourself as fortunate.
I would keep the coin or try to unload on a dealer for a reasonable price.
Mint policy is that the customer assumes all responsibility for risk of loss in shipping and any loss must be handled between you and the shipper. Also stated is that the mint does NOT INSURE any shipments!!!!! BEWARE
Above from the customer service section of the website
Well, all great points! I’m just going to keep it along with my PR70 that I still haven’t received. It’s made it to Anchorage, AK, but that’s another 800 + miles away from me and it was shipped FedEx. Where I live, there’s no FedEx or UPS. What happens is FedEx turns it over to USPS in (Los) Anchorage and it then comes to my Village via USPS. Another problem is FedEx does not deliver to PO Box’s. We only have PO Box’s here, there is NO residential deliveries. So I have to give FedEx a Fake address here and… Read more »
Hopefully the postmaster either 1) doesn’t know you’re a coin collector or 2) is the most honest and honorable person on earth.
She has no idea I am what I am! She’s a very good friend too. Course, I do NOT even tell my bestest friend(s) either! Family & Friends are the ones ya gotta watch out for, lol!
AKBob,
That is one of the most interesting “how I get my mail” stories I have ever read. Not only do you live in the Alaskan Outback but you also have an extremely convoluted, rather tricky and perhaps even bordering on sketchy postal service to contend with.
I agree AKBob, my two dogs keep me busy and I give them the best care imaginable. Why would I get excited about a coin (overpriced to be sure) with an image of a dog on it. Oh, I got to go…one of my dogs needs a belly rub. Do that with a coin!
“Oh, I got to go…one of my dogs needs a belly rub. Do that with a coin!”
LOL! Funny stuff.
Following up on the nickel discussion from a couple of articles ago. I wonder why the Mint hasn’t made a silver nickel as a numismatic product yet. In hindsight, 2020 would have made sense to do one in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of WWII (as the last silver war nickel was in 1945).
Excellent point.
Agree 100%!! I don’t collect nickels but I just might be interested in a Silver one, depending on price & mintage. I think nickels collectors deserve a bone at least. They seem to not get much in the way of special nickels.
Hmmm, another dog reference?
Could well be, Christo, but I think that wooden nickels meticulously shaved from puppy throw and fetch sticks would be even better to fit the bill.
Major D,
Excellent point indeed. There is no reason on earth that everything but for the one cent coin in the Mint’s Silver Proof Set shouldn’t in fact be made of silver. Good call!
I believe the Royal Canadian Mint had a silver nickel in this year’s RCAF Anniversary proof set. They went hog wild with silver pennies the 2012 farewell to the penny and the 2022 anniversary. I US Mint silver nickel would have been cool.
The mint did make a silver nickel. It was called a half dime. 🙂
Yes, the Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Capped Bust, and Seated Liberty half-dimes. The Jefferson nickel had the 35% silver war nickels in 1942-1945. But just like the Mint changed the silver composition for the dime, quarter and half starting with the 2019 silver proof sets (from the traditional 90% to the new 99.9% silver) it would be nice to see a 99.9% silver nickel as a one-time special anniversary coin.
If they had, it wouldn’t be a nickel, it’d be a silver. 😉
Last thread Major D reminded us that the mint’s job is to make a profit on numismatic coins.
OK if the idea is to not have continual losses in that department.
But if you end the annual report it clearly states “A main objective of the numismatic program is to INCREASE THE MINT’S CUSTOMER BASE AND FOSTER SALES WHILE CONTROLLING COSTS AND KEEPING PRICES AS LOW AS PRACTICABLE.” (Emphasis by me, not them)
The mint has NOT hit the bullseye on their objective. Matter of fact, they’ve missed the entire target. Not one of those objectives has been met, IMHO
DAVESWFL, I’d say you’re on to something there!
The Mint has alienated many, many…..mucho old time Base…. New suckers, uh customers must be plentiful HaHa
DAVESWFL,
Realistically speaking, the Mint HAS to fulfill the Fed’s orders, it WANTS to sell as much bullion as it can, and it PREFERS to keep us collectors coming back for more.
Good post, Dave. I think the mint does a great job of producing coinage for all sorts of collectors, it’s just their pricing structure that has me on the sidelines these days. But as they say ‘nothing stays the same forever’. Bring back ‘value’ and sales will flourish.
You hit the nail right on the head as usual, Craig. While the U.S. Mint’s selection of products is certainly varied enough to attract all types of collectors with any manner of individual and differing tastes, the one unfortunate communality of the Mint’s diverse offerings is their consistently over-priced status.
I see 46 3-roll sets of 2023 Tallchief were sold, not bad for an unavailable product.
And even 5 more Morgan/Peace revers proof sets were sold. Guess they must have found them on the back shelf somewhere.
Tom, I think it’s the Wild West over there, with no sheriff or marshal in sight. No rules or limits/ anything-can-go.
Ventris Garage Sale$ start @7a, EST……2am in Kona
Major D,
The only lawman around is already depicted and honored on the Marshals Service Commemmorative Silver Dollar and he’s clearly done all his service!
Tom, I have a hunch that at least one “back shelf” source happens to be the returns from the Mint’s speculative Bulk Purchasers who couldn’t unload all of their stock.
It’s like the 5 1913 Liberty nickels. Where did those come from?
They came from the “back shelf” no doubt.
Some shelves are organized by way of the alphabet.
They were on the shelf labelled “V” since the reverse has the Roman number “V”.
That same shelf is used today for a hoard of a certain 1C minted in Philly in 2023…
Tom,
I wonder if it’s possible to get those Tallchiefs slabbed with an “Unavailable” sticker?
