Gold is nearing $2500, silver nudging $32. Up, up and away, my beautiful balloon!
Does that justify $96 for an ounce of silver?
No, but it does justify not playing the Mints games any longer.
Hats off to Major D who had an extraordinary projection of initial sales of the silver dollars of 160,000! Great job. Maybe you could grace us with your projection of where the Dow or the price of silver will close for the week? wink wink
Thanks Kia99, but I was off a bit guessing 194K.
Powerfully nice of you, Kia99, to praise Major D’s prowess at prognostication of premium dollars and precious metals.
Luckily I’m not located locally for the loquacious litany of percussive letter lampoonery.
Bada bing, bada boom!
Received my morgan and peace dollars monday……flawless. Best of all is they are in the nice clamshells not that cheap plastic holder!
Congratulations, Domenic Vaiasicca, upon your receiving such perfect specimens!
Turns out I under-guestimated how much sales for the 2024 Uncirculated Morgan & Peace would be down. I guessed sales would be down 24% for the first 4 days (from the 2023 coins), to around 194K for each. Turns out the Morgan is down 34%, and the Peace down 36%. So, a $15 price rise got them $5 million extra in sales revenue, but then they’re down 180,072 in unit sales from the prior year which means they lost $13.7 million (at $76/unit). It’s a net loss of $8.7 million in sales revenue for the first 4 days. And that,… Read more »
Maybe we will end up having a lower mintage in the end not meeting the limit?
Most likely we will have lower sales, not meeting the limit, but I believe the limit was already minted based on subscriptions before the price was increased. So we can expect the extra units will be languishing on the mint’s web site for years…which is also, ” how not to make money”
I agree, Kia. I think the Mint’s production numbers are already baked and close to the 275K limit for each. The per unit production costs had to have part of its forecasting in arriving at the new price. But at least 275K is better than 400K (as with the 2023 proofs) — so it’s likely the Mint will get its money back in time. However, I’ll bet the price increase will hurt the FY24 numbers, which were already hurting before July 9th. And the upcoming proofs won’t help matters.
Major D
I was hoping there is enough time before release for the mint to scale back the proof production to approximate the actual demand. Subscriptions weren’t closed. Do you think the mint has already struck the 400K proofs of each?
Kia99, I think the Mint has likely struck the M&P proofs already, as it will take a few months to package and deliver to the warehouse. Fall is right around the corner. The Mint reduced the mintage and product limits from last year to 300,000 (likely because of the 2023s sticking around so long). It only took 12 days for the 2023 Morgan proof to get to 305,711. Whereas the 2023 peace proof took 16.5 weeks to get to 300,809.
The 2-coin reverse set went up in mintage to 262,500 (from 250,000).
They’ll sell em for a decade or more until they are all gobbled up.
The mint doesn’t allow a win.
It appears that what you are implying here, Tony@GA, is that as soon as an apparent future shortfall of Morgan and Peace Dollars portends a rise in their individual prices the Mint will see fit to release enough additional units of either or both for sale to nip any anticipated value enhancement in the bud.
Sorry for the late reply – Yes and no – I don’t think the Mint is that dubious – what I meant was – no matter how long it takes them to get to the limit – they’ll sell them. A “win” would be that they’d stop sales at a certain point and create a real “want” to the point that folks’ll pay big to get them. Kinda like the Lucy and Charlie Brown football kick they did with the Liberty & Brittania this year I feel really bad for the folks that shipped theirs off to be slabbed –… Read more »
Tony@GA, No need to be sorry for any delay in reply time. First of all it wasn’t that long at all, and secondly any reply is always welcome and certainly better than no reponse. It’s all good! Thanks for clarifying what you were describing regarding the Mint’s behavior pattern(s), and I’m sorry if I ended up assigning a more scurrilous nature to them than you had ever meant to imply. Perhaps what this means for personal planning purposes in the long run is that the Mint should be taken at its word when it announces a certain mintage whether or… Read more »
We’re dealing with the government here. How is Medicare more expensive than employer provided health insurance? It’s the government.
Reply, from previous thread, re: CCAC review of designs. Kaiser, ECG, AKBob, others, one thing is for sure, the designs are “diverse” and are broad in taste to say the least. Partially, the problem I believe(?), is at least for me, my taste in coin designs are leaning towards the classic ones, we’ve previously accepted become familiar with and come to love over a span of years, in which I’ve/we’ve(?) collected and or studied coins? Not to mention, the influence the views of Theodore Roosevelt imparted on my conscious, re: US Mint coinage preference, undoubtedly, after reading about, roughly 15… Read more »
CaliSkier,
I think I understand the gist of your extensive, well thought out and thoroughly researched argument, which is that while it is okay to come up with entirely new designs for our American coinage the resulting presentations should however remain within the parameters of historical validity, elegant form and good taste.
If we would have had the internet back in the 1970’s I’m sure we would be having the same arguments about the designs chosen for the bicentennial.
One, lonely Liberty and Britannia Au coin up for grabs! Just $3,370.
Still over 99 of the Ag available. I seem to recall the Mint doing something similar with the 2022 Amer Liberty bucking horse– seemingly being sold out at one-half of the mintage and product limit, then the other half appearing. With a mintage and product limit of 75,000 (same as Amer Liberty), I expect the L&B Ag to be around into 2025. And this could be the pattern for the upcoming Flowing Hair Ag as well if the mintage and product limit is the same (nothing listed as of today that I can find). The price is the same as… Read more »
Research results regarding selling silver proof sets vs breaking the coins out and selling separately. I used 2003 SPS as that’s what I have a ton to sell. Gross proceeds are 71% higher selling individually vs the set. Consider also the time involved (listing, packing, driving to the post office – 10 trips vs 1 ) and the chance some might not sell and the profit margin is a bit less. Also of note – IF you can sell the partial proof set (non-quarters) , then the quarter set sells easily AND the total selling price that way is better… Read more »
DaveSWFL, thanks for reporting what you found. That’s been my finding as well- that the sum of the parts is greater than the whole no matter how you break up. The tough part though, as a collector, is breaking up the set because it’s in our nature to complete the set, not the other way around.
DaveSWFL, when you break up the sets are you getting the coins certified or selling them raw? If raw, what are using as a holder?
Thanks
Thanks Dave and Major D, Dave those are good numbers and duly noted. I don’t have full sets to dump, but a number of the Silver Quarter sets, yet still good info. I’m curious though, as to what percentage of the 11 recent sold examples were; 1) Buy it Now, OBO. 2) A true, no reserve auction. 3) both equally +/-. I would guess that all of #1, vs all of #2 may skew the final $%’s one way or the other?… Also, when you say 100 Lincoln cents–that tells me that you have at least 100 sets to sell.… Read more »
Rick, No, I don’t have 100 of the 2003 sets to sell! Just pointing out that the return on the penny is huge vs face value. I just took the last 11 sales. There was a true mixture of BIN and auction. I did not see a huge general difference in the two methods, but a few people obviously got bargains on ignored auctions and , of course, some grossly overpaid by getting carried away with “auction fever” (those few were the eliminated outliers.) When I ship, I will use Air Tites capsules. Another expense….. All will be sold BIN… Read more »
Major D,
No, I won’t have any problems breaking them up as I bought them for investment purposes in the first place. Missing out on the 2012 set cured me of the need to complete my collection.
I still gritted my teeth every time I bought a set under $20 that I had paid $42+ at issue. Lesson learned. My mom always accused me of having to graduate from the School of Hard Knocks!!
DaveSWFL,
I would imagine that many more people have been enrolled in The School of Hard Knocks than any other educational institution in these entire United States. Surprisingly, while it is doubtless the easiest of any learning system to gain access to, it can under some unexpected circumstances end up being extravagantly expensive.
Good plan Dave,
As I’ve said before. This is a good way to get some extra Starbucks coffee money(Not I), or trade for more coins(I did/do that)…
Either way, your patience is what is paying off. Smart Man!
Great investment and the best of luck with your sales!
I just received an email from the mint on next years marine coins. Again, like other commemorative offerings in the past few years, the clad half had the best design. Reverses are all the same. I think I need a new hobby.
Have you tried stamp collecting? 🙂
That’s a good one, Christo! I’ll bet anything that there’s a gene for collecting, and I’ve got it. Perhaps others do, too. I started out young, collecting all manner of things– baseball cards, comic books, rocks, shells, beer cans, post cards, and yes, even stamps. My poor parents put up with a lot. Fortunately (or, unfortunately) I discarded all those other things years ago and have never looked back or wanted to collect any of them again. Now it’s just coins.
Major D,
I think there may be something to that. As for me, I at one time or another collected all but the beer cans; wine bottle labels served in place of those. My still existing collections are coins (obviously), postcards and illustrated notecards, and in the stamp department, first day covers.
Also the silver marine dollar is verrrrry similar to 230th anniversary in 2005
Maybe look into actual numismatic coins with real history. Almost all of the stuff the Mint puts out these days is over-produced, over-priced, and underwhelming.
One could say that new coins are just history in-the-making. I’d say that there was older stuff awfully over-produced as well, and some that was underwhelming, too.
Major D and Tom,
Since the reality of people having differing viewpoints gave rise to the concept that “one man’s floor is another man’s ceiling”, it would seem that here at coinnews.net we definitely require a rather substantial high rise to accommodate the significantly wide variety of opinions. Elevator, please!
Well said
People should collect whatever they like of course. ECG seems to be on the edge of leaving the coin hobby altogether, and I don’t blame him if he’s just looking at the US Mint modern coins. My own interest in the hobby took off after I started collecting older circulated Morgan and Peace dollars.
Tom, you’re absolutely right. I do like coins for the history and artistry, but the vast discrepancies in value of some over others is off-putting for me. I can’t help but feel the market manipulation and hype at play. That is likely what will cause me to leave the hobby altogether.
Has anyone seen what the 2024 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal is going for? $104, limit 5. I wonder what aftermarket will be.
Two big duds. I’m not buying anything from the Mint this year. They raise the prices and mintage limits and they lose customers.
