The sales total of the 2024-S Silver Proof Set dropped by 10,514 units in this week’s Mint report. That, my friends, seems to be a TKO by any other name.
Kaiser Wilhelm, that is definitely quite a significant decrease on the 2024 Silver Proof Sets indeed! We’ve become accustomed to “adjustments” in sales following a coins “reported” opening sales for sure. I’m just a tad curious to see how the “adjustments” tally downward for this latest 2024 Missouri AI $1’s. After all those 2024 Maine AI 1$’s have decreased by 85,730 coins since opening sales, as noted above in this latest report. Granted that’s coins not individual products, however this is still a fairly sharp decline IMO. How far will Missouri AI $1’s totals decline over the next few reports?… Read more »
CaliSkier, Wow, there certainly is a veritable cornucopia of material to unpack here and I will try to address as much as possible of this the best I can. Firstly, those 2024 Silver Proof Sets did take quite a hit saleswise but I can’t say I’m all that much suprised considering the ever more unreasonably elevated price being charged for it. You hit the nail on the head when you said you saw this coming in 2021 as the price for this Silver Set jumped by $41.75 in one fell swoop even as it was being offered with three less… Read more »
Kaiser, we won’t have long to wait to see how the 2024 AI$ Proof set (24GA) does upon release next week. The Mint increased the mintage limit to 99,792, up from 2023’s 80,055 (23GA). Both seem like they’re actual production numbers, especially the 99,792 because mintage limits usually are round numbers. I suspect the Mint is counting on the popularity of the Alabama Saturn V rolls and bags to skyrocket sales for the proof sets, so to speak.
Major D,
The Mint should consider itself fantastically fortunate to be able to include that one ultra-key coin in each of this year’s AI Proof and Reverse Proof Sets since I would bet dollars to donuts that without it both of those collections would be absolutely dead in the water.
CaliSkier, following up on the last article where you wrote: “We have no proof currently, that the Mint has detrashed and disposed of all the leftover Bush C&C sets.” The proof I have is from records kept when it was possible to check the available quantity in the source code. On Feb 6, 2022 the sales 9,694 + available 25,008 = 34,702. Now, after being unavailable for months, the number stands at 11,516. What happened to the 23,186 if not destroyed? Here’s some more based on my records of sales + available on Jan 15, 2023: 2018 Proof AI$… Read more »
Major D,
I of course have no reason or cause to quibble with the authenticity and/or accuracy of your facts and figures. My only input here would be that while trashed coin packaging may well be considered to be “destroyed”, wouldn’t it be somewhat kinder and gentler to describe what happens to surplus coins as being “melted down”? After all, coins are our friends.
I would quibble a bit and take it further to ask, as a non-Mint researcher(me)..
Where’s your proof that those many thousands of “available quantity then destroyed” coins & sets were ever produced/minted in the first place? Where’s the chart or mention on destruction data within the annual reports? Without looking, I’d guess that the Mintage figures have not been audited yet? Especially Bush…
This is a question, not a statement, thanks.
Rick and Kaiser, you can choose another word if you like but “destroyed” fits my characterization. I say “destroyed” in the sense that they were available for months and months then removed from inventory. I have no idea what happened to them, but they were not added back to inventory later. If they were never made, they would have not been in the inventory as available in the first place. The Mint has to have a way to allow or not allow sales to occur based on available inventory. They still do this, but we can no longer see it.… Read more »
“ If they were never made, they would have not been in the inventory as available in the first place.” “The Mint has to have a way to allow or not allow sales to occur based on available inventory.” Major D, I placed an order on 2/8/24 for an L&B Gold coin(day one). Your logic says that all 10,000 coins were available inventory that day. My logic says that not one single coin was available inventory that day. Furthermore, I will boldly claim that not one single coin had been struck yet on that day of availability. I, as you Major… Read more »
No, Rick that is not what I’m saying at all. Had the source code allowed viewing of the L&B inventory on that day I would speak to that. But it didn’t. I believe that you more than most understand the difference between a mintage & product limit and actual production numbers and available inventory. The L&B gold (10,000 mintage and product limit) were sold as advance orders, meaning the inventory was not yet available- hence the wait. The actual mintage so far as we know is below the 10,000 number, so likely fewer were made (but we’ll never know because… Read more »
I think I’m feeling a bit semantic’d-out at the moment!?
Maybe the Mint can tell us if the sets were destroyed, or if the source code was truly accurate and not some sort of FOMO trick? I’m betting the answer is NO. Anything else is pure speculation.
Mintage limits = Apple
Product limits = Orange
Production numbers = Peach
Available inventory = Grapes
Mintage finals = Fruit salad
I think I see the problem, guys. The Avocado Smoothie is missing.
Rick and Major D,
I sense a golden opportunity to mount a virtual wall plaque to quote yet another memorable coin oriented descriptive, in this case “I have no idea what happened to them”. Thanks, Rick!
Major D and Rick,
The curiously unexplained and unquestionably abrupt vanishing of the quantity available search function from the product pages of the Mint’s website is not just a mystery unto itself but more significantly so a big loss for those who liked to ascertain the current inventory numbers of any given product in order to use that information in their various coin dealings.
Rick,
I have to assume that you actually meant to address the above question to Major D as I have no fixed and/or firm personal knowledge regarding any of those apparently controversial facts and figures. My point about “not quibbling” had everything to do with moving on to my single intended reference as to the use of the term “destroyed” and nothing whatsoever to say about production number claims and counter-claims.
✔️!
CaliSkier, as I’ve explained previously why you cannot base numismatic silver product pricing on premium or % over spot I won’t go into it again. But I will say the Mint is facing some really bad revenue numbers this year, even before the price increase, because of around 35% fewer sales from last year and increased gross costs. The price increase in no way helped, and sales will drop further as a result. The number of collectors has fallen away (and continues to fall), so I don’t believe the Mint can fix this problem by increasing mintages and lowering prices… Read more »
Major D and CaliSkier,
I am given to calling this the (as termed by me) infamous “Circuit City Effect”. As said corporation was on its way – due to ever-declining sales and a concurrent dearth of profits – to what eventually became an inevitable bankruptcy, its only visible solution was to keep prices high and inventory low, a clear recipe for what turned out to be certain disaster.
Well, I did my bit returning a few of them. As you know, the quality was not very good.
Major D,
As did I, having returned both of mine just as quickly as I could, and indeed, for the extravagant (over melt value) or for that matter any price the quality of the coins left a great deal to be desired.
Which makes me think, Kaiser, that the 2024 Silver Kennedy PR70 is likely going to be a desired slab given the quality issues.
Major D,
I did give that a bit of thought but simply couldn’t bring myself to justify keeping those sets with the hope that something would come of just one coin in each, primarily because I don’t get coins graded and/or slabbed, which in itself is likely due to the same rationale as insisting on crank windows for my car and a flip phone in my pocket.
My take is that the mint is just another governmental agency – implying that the only real interest is in increasing their budget and planning without ever considering the worst case scenario. When it happens, the attitude is “whoever could have seen that coming?”. Circumstances beyond our control. And of course, NO ONE IS EVER HELD RESPONSIBLE!
Also, my guess would be that all those unsold AI dollars are tucked away in some Federal Reserve vault.
DAVESWFL,
In a nutshell, exactly so, without question, nail on the head, bingo and bullseye. Kudos!
The Mint is another Governmental agency Dave, that is not debatable. Just one of the many failed agencies over there in DC. Seldom does one get fired from any .gov agency. To those that think that the Mint is self-sufficient financially, think again.. On the subject of vaults? Let’s not forget the 70 million Kennedy halves, and the 4.5 million Native American Dollars that were struck and “intended for circulation” for 2023 & ’24..Yes, take many thousands out of those above numbers for mint rolls & sets… Where’s the rest of those literal millions of “circulation coins” I mention? Raise… Read more »
Rick, I’ve seen no proof that these pallets actually exist for any of the AI$. If you want to argue that the Mint’s FY reports are bogus go right ahead. But on paper, and as audited (allegedly) the FY23 report shows the Mint made a total of 397.3 million in net income and seigniorage:
Circulating Coins: $249 million
Bullion: 69.2 million
Numismatic: 249.0 million
Past FY reports show even more net income and seigniorage.
I’ve railed against the Mint myself on certain things, but c’mon everyone- let’s actually be educated about this, and the economics.
It’s interesting in the way that you spin, and completely ignore my point in regards to how the Mint earns “net income and seigniorage”. The annual report is completely transparent and is most certainly not bogus. I never said anything was bogus about the report. I said “To those that think that the Mint is self-sufficient financially, think again..”..In other words-you, me, and the Fed pay their wages. You also ignored my statement regarding the 10s of millions of circulating coins that were purchased by the Fed and never circulated(Kennedy & NA) over the last 1-2 years. Where are they?… Read more »
Rick, I’m not spinning a damn thing. That photo could be prez dollars or kennedy halves, or anything else. It is not proof of AI$. I do, however know how to read a financial report. The Fed is not paying Mint wages in the way you think. The Mint makes coins that the Fed buys. Just as the Corn Flakes you buy pay the Kellogg Company wages. But the Mint is given orders to produce circulating coins. If you think the report isn’t bogus, then the Mint is self-sufficient. It makes a profit across all three divisions: Circulating, Bullion and… Read more »
Lol…Was it something I said? I’m sorry if you’re mad at me, I totally get it. No one said that the the bags were any proof coins of any kind lol. 1) You and I buy bullion and numismatic coins from the Mint either directly or indirectly. 2) The Fed orders(buys) circulating coins from the Mint and stores millions of them somewhere. It’s a nice boost their revenue by millions of dollars. A balance sheet bailout. End of story. #1 and #2 above means this… We, as Taxpayers Pay the Mint’s Wages through ever increasing premiums, just like we pay… Read more »
Rick and Major D, As I’ve been following your discussion as to whether the US Mint is self-sufficient and who might a Mint “bailout” be coming from, which in that scenario would be the Federal Reserve, it comes to mind that it is indeed the Federal Reserve that is simultaneously neither Federal nor self-supporting in any plausible way. Whatever situation the Mint may be in when it comes to taxpayer support, it is the Federal Reserve which while it may or may not be the Mint’s ennabler is itself one of the biggest tax revenue vacuums in these here United… Read more »
Major D says: “I’ve railed against the Mint myself on certain things, but c’mon everyone- let’s actually be educated about this, and the economics” I will try hard to not repost all the close to 8 hours of non stop rants I posted on Mint News Blog in May of last year.(probably 10+(?), actual 22! Haha KPMG related posts) regarding the US Mint Annual Reports and the auditing of said reports. You might just want to get educated about and fully familiarize yourself with the US Mint audit company, KPMG, if not already up to speed? Let me know if… Read more »
My KPMG introduction and impetus for a serious “deep dive” last year(MNB), began with the following: “Transparency or lack thereof at the US Mint. 2023 Kennedy halves. CaliSkier says(reply to IJTR) MAY 12, 2023 AT 1:01 PM IJTR says: “If there are going to be millions shipped to the banks, that fact should be disclosed in advance of the collector coin release date.” LOL Thanks for the comic relief(IJTR)! Yeah, the Mint will get right on that! LOL Wait, I’m sorry for laughing, the US Mint has really been super, up front, honest, accurate, timely, forthcoming as well as transparent… Read more »
6 1/2 hours and 15 posts later I wrote: “CaliSkier says MAY 12, 2023 AT 7:29 PM Cag, since none of this numbers stuff dazes you, can you please explain the benefit and to what purpose KPMG, serves the US Mint? Because after reading the Annual Report and what it is they are doing or performing for the US Mint, this appears to be just a simple “check the box” we did it, type exercise in futility? Meaning the outside audit is performed, due to regulation, however nothing gets reported; fixed, altered, improved; etc, etc, etc??? The best checks and… Read more »
I’ll leave you with this one for now Major D: “CaliSkier says MAY 12, 2023 AT 7:37 PM Probably, didn’t test any internal controls? “United States Mint’s internal control. We did not test all internal controls relevant to operating objectives as broadly defined by the Federal Managers’ Financial Integrity Act of 1982. A deficiency in internal control exists when the design or operation of a control does not allow management or employees, in the normal course of performing their assigned functions, to prevent, or detect and correct, misstatements on a timely basis. Cali good luck with getting so much as to even an acknowledgment from Major D on the 10’s of Millions of 2023 circulating Kennedy’s bought from the Fed that are now missing…
I tried at least twice and I was ignored…Major D here’s your chance?
That spin from the “United States Mint’s internal control” is a good one I’ll admit..
How many times do they say weaknesses, deficiencies, and compliance–Quickly now! Don’t peek!
However, spin is an interesting function we’re all guilty of from time to time……..
if the mint wasn’t required by law to make all those pennies, they wouldn’t have to get so desperate with all the overpricing and shenanigans on the collector side to try to make up for the immense losses from making pennies that barely circulate.
Same thing with the nickel(cupronickel), 75% copper & 25% nickel.
Every one of them go into the jar and never spent. Maybe it’s just me, but I consider those nickels to be a semi-precious coin anymore. Gresham’s Law. The madness will at some point come to an end with those 5C and 1C coins imo.
Well, at least Canada got SOMETHING right! Their elimination of the Canadian cent was a brilliant move.
And the world didn’t even end!
DaveSWFL, I’d add that even today 12 years after it was discontinued you still have Canadian 1c in circulation as they’re still legal tender in Canada. But bad news for hoarders of US copper, 12 years out and it’s still illegal in Canada to melt them. So, if the US followed suit and eliminated the Lincoln cent tomorrow, melting will likely not be permitted in the US for at least another 12 years. Legal melting will not happen in my lifetime.
And I will now proudly say this, and take note everyone…
I agree with you Major D!!
Not only would melting down US coinage be illegal, but entirely stupid imo…
Why? Because you can trade those coins for well over face value due to their metal content whether it be Gold, Silver, or Copper. Don’t be a fool and melt any coins.
1) Pre-’65 Washington Quarter = 20x face value all day.
2) Pre-’83 Lincoln Cent = 5x face value all day.
3) USM Nickels = Composition change/cancellation pending…

They’re melting & selling the copper streetlight wires here. Nobody cares, u need a smelter and make copper bars! Or just drink Kopper Whiskey. I have a bunch of these love to melt, and Rick I found an old Rx tune w 40 war nickels, kinda kool the War 5c
John Q. Coinage,
It takes two to tango, so I would say the people who are willing and ready to buy the obviously stolen copper wire are just as much crooks as those who provide it to them.
Exactly. And while we are on the subject of copper, in a SHTF scenario, insulated copper wire, tube and pipe will be far more valuble then copper rounds or bars. Buying them in such a useless form to be a “barter” item or an investment is nothing but a scam. Further, most of the YouTube ‘stacking’ channels pushing some of these products are now just a political arms of on-line precious metal retailers.
c_q, those pennies have absolutely nothing to do with numismatic pricing. As it is, the dimes, quarters and half-dollars more than make up for the cent and nickel losses. Here it is again, $249.0 million made in seigniorage in FY23…
Well I am officially out of the mints fun house party. Drop my subscriptions and I feel pretty good about it. If I need them in a few years, I’ll find them and they won’t be tough to locate.
Welcome ECG I fired the USM back in ‘22…
John Q. Coinage,
In order to fire someone they have to work for you in the first place. It seems to be the case that the Mint has never worked for us. 😉
Between earlier today and this evenings World Market, PM’s are suffering a bit of a “beat down”! Almost as if all PM’s had been placed into a burlap sack together, additional weight added, tied off and thrown into a large body of water? Right Kaiser?
CaliSkier,
That would most definitely appear to be the case, my friend. I might guess that the precious metal shorting crowd at the Commodities Exchange has begun fitting those various shining beauties with the proverbial cement overshoes.
Attention Lakes Michigan and Superior: Now adding to Davy Jone’s Locker!
Not to mention Comex option expiration for gold and silver today (7/25/2024).
Rich,
Forgive my ignorance but I have no idea what that means. Please explain.
