US Mint Sales: “S” Silver Eagle, Celia Cruz Quarters, and Chester A. Arthur Medal Debut

76

Last week was busier than usual for the United States Mint with its new product launches, which included the 2024-S Proof American Silver Eagle, Celia Cruz quarters, and the Chester A. Arthur Presidential Silver Medal. The latest sales data from the U.S. Mint highlights how these products have initially performed.

The proof Silver Eagle was released on Aug. 7 in two product options: standalone and 40-coin packs for authorized bulk buyers. It achieved combined sales of 131,680 coins within the first five days of its release.

Breaking down the numbers by option, sales include 119,000 coins for the standalone option (product code 24EM) and 12,680 coins for the 40-coin bulk option (product code 24EM040), with 317 units sold.

Released annually, this year’s proof Silver Eagle is priced at $95. In contrast, last year’s single-option coin was initially sold for $80. It recorded a six-day debut of a combined 204,744 coins, with 180,104 coins sold for the standalone option (product code 23EM) and 24,640 coins for the 40-coin bulk option (product code 23EM040), with 616 units sold.

Debut Sales of Celia Cruz Quarters

Also released on Aug. 7, the Celia Cruz quarter marks the fourteenth installment in the U.S. Mint’s four-year coin series commemorating the achievements of American women and is the fourth quarter issued this year. Combined roll and bag products sold in the early days totaled 1,925,500 quarters.

For comparison, the first three quarters of this year, dedicated to Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, and Patsy Takemoto Mink, recorded initial sales of 1,887,760 quarters, 2,010,460 quarters, and 1,919,240 quarters, respectively.

All these figures represent a slower start than any of the five quarters released in 2023, with their sales debuts ranging from 2,141,420 coins for the 2023 Maria Tallchief quarter to 2,745,380 coins for the 2023 Bessie Coleman quarter. The totals are higher than any of the five quarters released in 2022, but this is not a fair comparison as the Mint offered fewer than 1.8 million for each of them.

Debut Sales of Chester A. Arthur Presidential Silver Medal

Released on Aug. 8 and priced at $90, the 1-ounce .999 fine silver medal featuring Chester A. Arthur recorded initial sales of 14,001. Its sales already surpass those of any other Presidential silver medal released since 2021, except for the Abraham Lincoln medal, which has reached 19,338. That said, a similar situation briefly occurred with the three preceding medals honoring James A. Garfield, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Ulysses S. Grant. However, all three later experienced some negative adjustments.

That’s a good list E 1, and good advice that I could follow more closely I’d admit. Even half of the list would be great as contributors, although imo more than half lurk. I know of one full time eBay seller who posts every once in a while because he’s been on my preferred seller list for more than a decade. Si, Hasta la Proxima Hermano.

Kaiser Wilhelm

E 1,

Das ist ausgezeichnet. I’m so happy to be joined in bilingual commenting!

Kaiser Wilhelm

E 1,

By the way, while your Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States after English, my own language, even though Germans are the second most populous ethnic group after the British in America, doesn’t crop up until you get to Number 10 on the list. We can thank the bad feelings engendered during World Wars I and II for that. As for Klingon, there doesn’t seem to be any notation. Chinese, on the other hand, currently occupies spot number three for languages spoken here.

Kaiser Wilhelm

A picture, E 1, of where our various languages are spoken the most…

I use to come here everyday but some things were getting out of control like name calling and just plain not being nice. I’m coming back and see how it goes this time around. Hope some of the people I recognize before are still here.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Joe,

I would say it’s mostly peaceful here, and we do have the option of not engaging.

A good sentiment, E 1- but I question the effectiveness of making the appeal here where readers are part of the blog already. And expanding the CoinNews base seems to me to be more the job of CoinNews, which has a far greater outreach capability than any individual. But I applaud your effort, nonetheless. As for the tolerance and argument part, I wish that were true, but folks here just love to ignore or join in when the rhetoric and prejudices favors their own world view. A certain comic book cover, and frequent DEI, Biden, Kamala and immigrant quips come… Read more »

Major D,

“So, we should all strive to practice what we preach – and to call out any offender to stop once you see it.”

My hesitation regarding the latter part of that advice stems from the occasions on which the “call outs” have been even more egregious than the original “offense”.

E 1

Major D, Yes. A rigid response in deed. However, your comments are necessary as to set the boundaries and guidelines for our numismatic community that is intended to serve us all, and to stop the unpleasant discourse. In addition, we should always continue to seek numismatic talent and expertise to enlighten us further. Anything less is a dead weight loss for us all. Numismatics is a hidden gem held by few. So, try to appreciate your insight and your holdings. In good sentiment, thank you for your applause and your response, no worries, and no need to reply. All my best… Read more »

As I’ve said elsewhere, you do have a unique and special ability to call out the usual suspects without coming even close to resorting to their own devices. Kudos!

Did you get any? I bought the three roll option. I’m still unhappy about not being able the purchase the three rolls of Anna May Wong. I believe the mint prematurely halted sales of coins in 2022. Anyway, Azucar!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Antonio, Good for you to still be “rolling” along with those, most especially so while I on the other hand no longer am. Granted, there is a part of me that wishes I hadn’t stopped getting those rolls a few American Women Coins ago but that (at this point basically pointless) feeling of regret could just as easily be applied to the entire spectrum of the various coin series I am no longer picking up from the US Mint. There’s really no big mystery behind any of this apparent domino effect of putting a stop to one after another of… Read more »

More hanky panky with the sales numbers…???
.
How do you sell 232 palladium eagle proofs when there were only 34 shown as available last week?

Antonio

The favored dealers trick. Ah, know it well, know it well. (Accolades to W.C. Fields).

Another good reminder not to drink water. (Courtesy of W.C. Fields)

Kaiser Wilhelm

sharks2th,

Likely in some way akin to how dealers in gold on paper sell the identical “ownership rights” to X amount of actual vault gold to 10X or more customers all the while maintaining the hope there will never come a time when all the gold paper possessors will want their physical gold all at once. Every gold dealer’s nightmare.

John Q. Coinage

Did Celia’s family approve of THAT rendition….fuguly ha looks like a mask…. Wow.

Tom

ugh. just saw the price on the reverse proof Morgan and Peace dollar.
$215. Had thought maybe I would at least continue my subscription on that one, but cancelling that one like all the other silver items

CaliSkier

Tom, although the silver price increases were implemented on July 9th, this seems like a good time for a refresher on what products are still to come, exhibiting the new pricing. The vast majority of silver product prices had been raised by $15/oz, a little over 1 month ago. On September 12, the Mint releases the 2024 Morgan and Peace Proof coins at $95, whereas the 2023’s were priced at $80. This is followed by the October 2 launch of the Grover Cleveland Presidential Silver medal at $90, ouch. Next up will be the “Flowing Hair” silver medal coming in… Read more »

CaliSkier,

It appears that the Mint’s price increase analogy has changed from being represented by a slow escalator to mimicking the aspects of an express elevator.

Antonio

Following pricing practices of European mints. Be thankful they don’t raise the postage rates as well, as is the case in Europe.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Antonio,

Nice one, considering the Postal Service just introduced yet another (third) price increase, all within the shortest time span in memory.

Kaiser Wilhelm

CaliSkier,

If the Mint’s prices keep going up as the buying power of the dollar continues to decline over the years due to inflation, the eventual aftermarket real dollar selling value of these overpriced silver ducats could well end up in the pooper.

DaveSWFL

John Q,
A CLOWN mask, at that!!! This one is just fugly 🙁

Kaiser Wilhelm

DaveSWFL,

To be fair, I think a good part of the responsibility for the admittedly somewhat grotesque appearance of the face on that coin in this particular image belongs to the very poor lighting arrangement involved in the taking of that photograph.

Kaiser Wilhelm

By the way, it looks to me like a Kabuki Theater presentation of Dracula In Tokyo.

Major D

I agree that it’s a bad photo, Kaiser- some awful glare and shadowing. But then given the quality of recent circulation stamped coins in general I’d say most will not photograph well. The proofs are more generous to the design.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D,

Well said. An object can only photograph as well as its real world appearance.

CaliSkier

LOL, Kaiser Wilhelm, as I was literally thinking very similar thoughts many ours ago, I was looking up images online of Celia Cruz and comparing the original design drawings(CCAC) US Mint photos on the product page, to the above pictured Coin News photo. I came to the same conclusion with the lighting and wondered if anyone else’s eyes, saw the fangs, that seemingly are from the uneven lighting on her tongue? Rendered pictures on the product page looked much better IMO. Also, initially(we all know we will see returns) there were fairly strong sales reported for all of her product… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

CaliSkier,

Since this AWQ series has been of great appeal to me it pains me to see depictions such as that unfortunate “likeness” at the top of the article.

Major D

Kaiser, it’s not my favorite design, but what do you think about the proofs and silver proofs looking better?

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D,

Unquestionably so. Clad uncirculated metal seems to bring out the worst in coin image appearance, while clad proof and silver proof appear to be able to achieve the opposite. Now that the Mint’s silver coins have joined the gold ones in the far overpriced arena, my go-to collector coins will be of the clad proof variety.

I’ll only buy next year’s silver proof AWQs. After that, I’m done with it. Other coins may follow suit soon after. Although for the 250th coins I may give it some consideration. Depends how they appear to me and the cost.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Antonio,

Unless one has a particular yen (or maybe a peso or Euro) for the silver proof JFK Half Dollar in the annual Silver Proof Set getting the Silver Proof AWQ set instead is an economical alternative, although after the latest price increase for the latter even that one is no longer quite the deal it was before.

Jeff Legan

Hello all, I started collecting OGP (Original Government Packaging) proof ASE’s (American Silver Eagle’s) in 2008. I purchased all my 2008 and earlier from Littleton. Most everyone knows Littleton is expensive. I even knew it when I purchased my ASE’s from them. I did it anyway, because with their longevity and I hoped a reputation to uphold, I would not end up with any counterfeits. That was my biggest concern. I can handle overpaying, but I cannot handle not getting what I paid for. I have bought some rarer items from Littleton that have doubled or near doubled in value,… Read more »

East Coast Guru

Nice work Chris. I see you didn’t add any of the ASE’s mint burnished versions to the list. That’s fine as you are only doing proofs. By the way, the 2017 S proof also came in the 2017 LESP. Here is another list you can use from Liberty coin. (Apparently putting a link in needs approval.) So search for American eagle complete list and Liberty coin service should pop up. It is a good list you can print out.

Jeff Legan

Thanks East Coast Guru, That is a nice list they have. Too bad I did not see that earlier, I probably wouldn’t have created my own. The only issue I have with it is it is an off color, so I would not want to print it, wasting that much colored ink on a background. I see it is damn near the same format I randomly stumbled upon as I was creating my own. The only thing it does not list is any product numbers. They also did not call the 2017-S a set. I mulled that one over as… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

East Coast Guru,

This is a bit of a side note to your comment, but I just want to say that with the ASEs it would be difficult to go wrong whether you are into burnished or proof since both versions are consistently attractive and desirable coins to possess.

Rich

Hi Jeff, congratulations on establishing a complete list of proof ASE’s, 1986-2024, and sharing it with us. It is indeed complete and accurate. The only notes I would add to yours is: a) the 2012 Coin and Currency Set also contained the 2012-S proof ASE; b) the 2017 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set (LESPS) also contained the 2017-S proof ASE. Additionally, the 2012-2016 LESPS contained the “W” mint proof ASE, the 2017-2020 LESPS had the “S” mint proof ASE, the 2021 LESPS had a “W” and a “S” mint proof ASE, and the 2022-2024 LESPS has the “S” mint proof… Read more »

Jeff Legan

Thanks Rich,
If you tell me it is complete and accurate, I believe you.
I appreciate the additional info as well. I will wait a day or two and take a look again to see if anyone else adds any more info, and incorporate any additions onto my list.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Jeff Legan,

It’s not by accident that Mike “Sold Out/Limited Edition” Mezack uses the Littleton Catalog for his go-to coin price reference guide on his show. Compared to Littleton’s sky high prices even Magic Mike’s can seem to appear semi-reasonable.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Jeff Legan,

My very wise wife occasionally has to remind me that “you get what you pay for”, so paying more to get the real thing is not at all a bad idea; in fact, it makes perfect sense.

Major D

Jeff and Kaiser, I’m sure that we’ve all been there in terms of paying more $ for a coin than we needed to. I’ll disagree with you Kaiser though with the notion that “you get what you pay for”. Just because two like coins are priced differently doesn’t necessarily mean that the more expensive one is the better one. Different sellers have different motivations.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D,

That wasn’t the comparison I was aiming for, to put two like items side by side and considering the more expensive of the two to be automatically superior. I was thinking instead of two identical coins of different grades and being willing to pay the grade differential in order to end up with a better coin.

Major D

Kaiser, sorry to have misconstrued. Thought the discussion was about OGP and Littleton vs other sellers.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D,

Not to worry, my friend. It doesn’t take me long to realize whenever we aren’t connecting the dots in the same way that it has to be due to a miscommunication of particulars and one that is always easy to parse out and as such consequently correct.

E 1, et al., I’m afraid I only qualify in your no. 1 category – coin hobbyist. I generally try to read most comments daily, but I post rarely. I’ve certainly learned a great deal about aspects of coin collecting that I was woefully ignorant of. Most of the posters/commenters are interested in new issues of the USM…but after being locked out of the 2021-D L/P, and spending the the most enraging 25 minutes of my life to get a few examples of the 2021-P coins, they lost me as a customer. Seeing the ongoing comments regarding USM price increases,… Read more »

Sam-I-Am, You’re good. Your “Granddaddy Eiseman’s” collection sounds like something to hold and cherish forever. Do yourself a favor and don’t sell any of it. Research all of it piece by piece and have it graded if you can. Let it sit. Protect it. Never try to polish or clean any of it. Wait. Cherish it. Enjoy it. Keep it in the family. If you hang out here long enough and read – you will eventually know and learn to love what your grandfathers did for you. Some day you will need a new car or a house and hopefully… Read more »

No worries of selling – my heirs will have that job. I’ve had a few graded/slabbed by PCGS – they marked all but one as cleaned. One coin I’ll gladly concede looks like it, but with a Thaler of Rudolph II dated late 1500’s, how can you tell? It’s over 400 years old! PCGS did mark it Genuine, so that’s something. It’s never been cleaned by me since 1967, I can attest. Back then, almost all coins came from dealers in 2×2 paper envelopes…maybe scuffed from occasional handling in/out of those? Seeing the prices on those little manila envelopes is… Read more »

That 1500 Thaler is a money coin.

Regarding the picture upload…. Make sure your photo is on the PC making the upload. I always remove all details from the file. Look for the following Icon after pressing the reply button in the blog. I am sure there are a number of people here that can make an assessment of your coin.

I’m looking forward to seeing your coin pics, we like looking at coins!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rick,

Kaiser Wilhelm

Sam-I-am,

Heck, you could “qualify” as a partridge in a pear tree on the list and still fit in with us.

East Coast Guru

I just received a email for 2023 Morgan and peace dollars. First strike, flag label MS 70. $95 each. Wow, the market has sure dropped with those coins.

Major D

East Coast Guru, this begs the question that’s been on my mind for a while: What is the true state of the coin collecting marketplace? For US Mint coins made in the 2020’s my perception is of ever downward sliding mintages and sales, a sign of the demand dropping away and a hobby in decline. Are dealers and coin shops feeling the pinch? Anyone who regularly attends coin shows please chime in as to what you’re seeing regarding attendances, or any knowledge otherwise. I would really like to be wrong about this.

Kaiser Wilhelm

East Coast Guru,

If the level of demand continues to soften, the prices will fall. Only top tier coins, the kind that typically sell only at auction, seem to be able to hold their own and might see a price jump at times. However, if you follow auction prices these days you will notice that even some of the glitziest coins aren’t guaranteed to maintain their value forever; they too experience the occasional drop in price over the years.

Davefromtampa

After over 50 years of collecting coins I can honestly say that I am so disappointed in the Us Mint which has become a political arm of the current political party. I have enjoyed reading all of the posts in all the blogs. This is my first post and will be my last concerning the hobby I have loved for so many years. My dad and I loved so much to understand that it was not collecting the coins but understanding the history behind of the dates associated with the coins. So for all of you I have read your… Read more »

Major D

Davefromtampa, it takes Congress to write the coin legislation and the President to sign it- so given that there’s been mostly divided gov with one party controlling the House and/or Senate and another controlling the Prez, to say it’s become a “political arm of the current political party” doesn’t hold much water for me. But I share your fear that coin collecting is a dying hobby, and your hope of being wrong in that regard as well.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D,

That you provided such a coherent and logical response to Dave without once coming anywhere close to treading onto partisan territory is a stroke of genius.

Davefromtampa,

You sound like a true lover of coin collecting so it seems a shame you feel the need to distance yourself for non-numismatic reasons from further enjoing your favorite hobby with others here. Just wanted to share my thoughts on that with you, and maybe someday you’ll change your mind, but in the meantime, keep collecting!

Sam-I-am

Well, my attempt to post a photo of the 1595 Thaler of Rudolph II crashed & burned. Seems my pic was too big – the limit is 2MB; my pic was over 2X that size. Now I need to figure out how to make lower resolution pics on my wife’s phone. Aargh! Digital media and dinosaurs like me just don’t seem to play well together…

Just about spot on! If that’s not my personal coin, it’s dang close! Where did you find the image?

Kaiser Wilhelm

Sam-I-am,

Very glad to oblige and I’m happy to have hit the target. In regard to the source, I did some research with the help of Mr. Google until I found precisely the one I was looking for; the only difficulty I had was combing through the assorted dates these had on the various sites where they appeared. As for the actual online location, I’m sorry but I just didn’t happen to keep a record of that.

Anyone familiar with the error on the 2024 Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray Quarter?

E 1

Antonio,

Not yet. Please advise.

Antonio

Thank you all. All I’m seeing are coins with dings, scratches and alleged double dies for sale on ebay. There was an alleged “T” around Washington’s eye which I don’t see anymore.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Antonio,

I’m experiencing more than a fair amount of skepticism as to what these characters on ebay who are selling up-priced “error coins” really believe about the coins they want to convince us are so special. They’re likely just making use of the “there’s a sucker born every minute” principle.
