How many here know that the dime has 118 ridges around the edge? Not me … until today. I read it on my handy dandy 16-month trivia calendar.
I knew there was something missing from my life. No longer.
Guys…here’s your opening line when you meet that hot girl and always are unsure what exactly to say to impress her. ‘How many ridges are around the edge of a dime?’….there’s going to be a ton of lucky guys out there tonight!
Craig,
In one fell swoop you’ve managed to eliminate the main reason for every man’s hesitation. Especially with the word “ridges” in that line, how can you lose?
…and you know you have a keeper if she counts them to check your work.
VA Bob,
In lieu of smoking a cigarette in the afterglow?
And now the question of the day – does that magic number hold for all US coinage?
“According to U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White, the normal American Eagle 1-ounce gold coin’s collar die imparts 161 reeds, while the edge dies for the American Eagle 1-ounce silver bullion dollar carry a reed count of 201”
Well, obviously ZERO on the cent, nickel, and golden dollar coins. Anybody got a count on the quarter, half, and silver dollar coins??
Thanks to Kia99 for the eagle information.
DAVESWFL and Kia99,
The entire thread seems to concern itself with the number of ridges on the edge of each coin denomination, or did I perhaps reed this wrong?
Yeah, it’s the old “You Need to Know” public service announcement in thread form.
REB,
Perhaps more than any of us need to know at our age. Just sayin’.
Kaiser,
I like your “edgy” comments!
DaveSWFL,
Why thank you. I do tend to venture off the straight and rigid.
Incidentally, just in case you missed it, “reed” was not a misspelling!
Reminds me of….
Three!
Oh lawdy lawdy, Trip Trigger Tony in the house!
OMG, you ALL are Killing me! It’s actually pretty kewl we can do a little joking around on this Blog! Lightens things up a bit! Not that there’s been any tensions as I’m not aware of any! All interesting questions & answers. Gotta love it!!
AKBob,
I’m really glad we help to brighten up each others days here! My dear wife and I have long agreed that while love comes first in life, humor is a very close second.
I guess no one is interested in the T2 Proof ASE. Well, neither am I. Back in the day, I was a fan of the T1 ASE. I had a complete PCGS registry set in 2015. Then one day I noticed those calcium spots on the 2008-2014 issued coins. I ended up dumping all the spotted coins. These are all of the ASEs I have left now. I still have a number of really nice reverse proofs though. I stopped collecting the ASE in 2020. Well, back to Walkers and Morgans now.
Cheers
Absolutely impressive!
I had so many before the boating accident….
Beautiful cases – beautiful!!
Thanks Tony.
E 1,
I feel absolutely confident in saying without the slightest exaggeration that is by far one of the most impressive coin displays it has ever been my great pleasure to see!
Thank you Kaiser.
You’re entirely welcome, E 1.
Are those ‘Red Oak Boxes’ from Magic Mike! Those calcium spots on the 2008-2014 coins, were they also encapsulated in plastic or still in OGP? I stopped collecting the ASE last year as the reverse design didn’t knock me over, plus the price of them. Like you, I’m focusing on picking up some nice classic Morgans these days.
Craig,
“Red Oak Boxes” and “Magic Mike” seem to have become inseparable concepts!
E1, I second Tony@GA’s sentiment–Beautiful! Great Presentation E1. As I’ve said before, sorry you got burned on the ASE spotting problems. I’ve seen that problem on some ASE unc coins just 3 years old as well. Back to your collection, nice! 1) I see some of those Reverse Proofs from here, I like those and have a few. What’s that coin next to one of them-the Maple leaf and the PCGS black shield, A set? 2) obviously not all of your coins were plagued by spots. Have any of your remaining ASE’s developed any in the last 5 years? 3)… Read more »
Rick, Glad to hear from you. . 1) The slabs with the Black PCGS Shield came from the “Pride of Two Nations” Set. Why they made them black, I don’t know. They are both “First Strike” coins though. . 2) I just looked at the set today and I did not see any spots. That’s why I pulled the set out this morning. To check for spots. The set has been sitting for years. It use to be painful to look at and not so much anymore. I removed about 28 coins from the set in 2015 leaving 72. But, there are… Read more »
E 1,
That Pride of Two Nations Set is a beauty; I’m glad I picked up a couple of them.
Thanks for the link to Wizard Coin Supply; talk about having a lot of inventory!
E1, Thanks for the info, I agree that the TPG boxes are cheap and I find them to be a temporary storage solution. They don’t mind sending them out in droves either. If you have just one coin graded, it comes in the 20 coin box. I have sent coins back to them in their boxes for re-holdering, etc. NGC uses the accordion paper style box(for shipping)as well and they rattle plenty too. I have some Intercept Shield brand storage for individual and multi slab boxes, just haven’t transferred many of them yet. I’m going to place my “V” coins… Read more »
PS: “70” grades..
That’s the problem in recent years. Yes, minting technology has progressed and there’s great quality going out the door(highly arguable point), but it’s the TPG market share wars that’s been driving gradeflation. Just look at all the 25-30 year old slabbed coins that are being resubmitted, gold stickered, and cherry picked (from you too) for the higher grades. CAC claims to buffer this problem, but I see them caving into the $$ market share soon enough. Imo …
Rick, You’ve just pointed out an interesting conumdrum which might constitute a somewhat problematic issue with the entire Third Party Grading procedure. For TPGs to both stay in business and to (hopefully) grow they have to keep their customers happy since no customer would be pleased with getting anything less than consistently high coin grades. This poses a real dilemma in that authentic honest grading, which implies that not all coins are 70s, might be in conflict with customer satisfaction. The result might be a driving force for TPGs to artificially up-rate their customers’ coins, thereby putting the lie to… Read more »
Who knows for sure? Competition for our $$ won’t ever end, just like everything else. The subjective human perspectives will still be involved, but AI technology is on the way for coin grading to help us TPG nut jobs out.
Love it or hate it(technology)but even walking into a fast food restaurant or a grocery store anymore you deal with a screen to take your order, not a person…
Rick,
It won’t be long before AI Third Party Grading Services will compete on the basis of which one has the superior numismatic logarithms.
Rick,
“I’m going to place my “V” coins into some of those since they will tone even when slabbed, we’ll see if they work, well someone will eventually see!?”
That’s a great way of putting it, Rick, and it sure does cover all the bases. As we get older, this will become more of an inevitable reality for us coin collectors.
@E1 nice!
I pieced up a 5-slab Lighthouse holder at a local salvage/discount store for half of the retail price.. The 5-slab variant was sort of goofy because it seem like a 6-slab variant would have been the same size. I probably should have gotten more.
https://www.lighthouse.us/nobile-coin-box-for-5-slab-black.html
VinnieC,
I had to laugh because it seems like the “should haves” ought to be ranked right up there with the “FOMOs” as far as where we think we might just be missing the boat.
VinnieC,
Here is another one of my favorites……

Bingo! (above link), These cases would be great for larger type sets, similar to your ASE setups. I don’t have anything like these(YET!).. I have my growing Morgan and Kennedy collection that need these in a big way I think. 1C coins, Gold, or whatever multi coin type inventory would welcome this presentation & storage solution. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas E1 & VinnieC… The best part is, is that instead of more socks and slippers this holiday season, at least one of those will be unwrapped! My family is always trying to figure out what to get me… Read more »
Rick,
You can find the engraved brass plaques on Amazon.
Search “engraved brass plates with adhesive”
Also, if there is a “Things Remembered” near you, they can make them on the spot.
Peace Out
I don’t have too much regret for not having bought more of the slab holders. I maybe could have used one more. Now if they were under $10 then I would have gone hog wild. My stuff really doesn’t warrant a fancy display case. My most favorite coin is an NGC MS 62 1800-CC Rev of 78 (1880/79 VAM-4) but it is graded in the GSA holder so it wouldn’t fit. I have more favorites that I never had graded in the US Mint OGP. Now if I were to get a slabbed Athena/Owl Tetradrachm and a 1935 Old Spanish… Read more »
BTW the amusing thing that came with the GSA CC Morgan was a COA that some one wrote “1800 CC Uncirc = $60.00”. I would have been great if I got it at that price!
That’s great stuff VinnieC!
It’s amazing to think that most of those CC GSA coins were sold for well under $50 back in the 70’s. I think many were bid on as well, like $15 bucks gets you one in some cases? Interesting story about those also is that the GSA put the “ugly” toned coins into the lesser ranked holders labeled “Silver Dollar” instead of the higher ranking “Uncirculated Silver Dollar” holder. Now everyone likes the ugly toned coins lol.
REB, Craig, others, don’t forget that, Ruffles slogan vs the reeds of a coin! LOL For any with additional curiosities regarding the number of reeds on circulation coins, here’s the link to the US Mint page with the “details”. US Mint “Coin Specifications” including reeds.
https://www.usmint.gov/learn/coin-and-medal-programs/coin-specifications
Verrrrrrry interesting Colonel Klink! My feathers got Ruffled when I considered the quarter is 33% larger than a dime but only got one more ridge whilst the half is only 25% larg than a quarter yet received abundantly more ridges.
Where’s the equity for the quarter?
DaveSWFL,
Here I thought I was alone in being kept awake at night by that singular injustice!
I just received an email from Provident for 2023 and 2024 Morgan Silver Dollars for $72.80!! I guess the Mor/Pea is becoming a Dud too! I’m not the only person that is already tired of this product early on! I even sold ALL of my 2021’s. They will come down in value too in time! I just saw a 2021 D MS70 PCGS Morgan Dollar First Strike, Flag Label that was up for auction, starting at $1050.00 and not one bid. The Seller has resisted it. Those were going for $1500 + just a month or two ago. The Mint… Read more »
Did a similar thing …kept the ’21’s and got the ’23’s….just sold the RP ’23 set at a loss and cancelled sub to this year’s issues just in time to avoid having them delivered..you might catch the ’24’s slabbed (69 grade) for just slightly more. the program no longer appeals to me because it is a contrived shiny object ….yes, go back and put the $$$ toward vintage issues
AKBob,
“I just saw a 2021 D MS70 PCGS Morgan Dollar First Strike, Flag Label that was up for auction, starting at $1050.00 and not one bid.”
Could be my imagination but it seems the Seller is trumpeting the Slab and not the Coin.
Kaiser,
I watched a Magic Mike coin show on HSN last March, and that’s all he talks about….the Labels. Oh, and you get a coin along with your ‘rare, desirable’ label. I never thought coin collecting was going to become so confusing. Personally, I’m waiting for an Ai imbued holder that will flash your deepest, darkest desires on your touch. Flag Label…who needs a flag!
Craig,
Now there’s a combination we could rather happily have done without, Magic Mike and his relentless drum beating type of concentration on the impossible to resist aspects of fancy slab labeling; heaven help us!
In regard to that AI imbued encapsulation with a call up list of secret desires at whim, best hope it isn’t automatically and simultaneously reporting the sordid details to the nearest station of the Puritan Police!
