Last week, the United States Mint began selling five ornaments featuring 2024 quarters honoring Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, Patsy Takemoto Mink, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Celia Cruz, and Zikala-Ša. Each of the ornaments ranked among the Mint’s best sellers of the week.
Released on Aug. 22 for $35 each, the starting sales ranged from 1,352 for the Zitkala-Ša ornament to 1,759 for the Celia Cruz ornament. Sales of the other three ornaments each debuted below 1,374, indicating a clear preference for the Celia Cruz ornament.
For comparison, last year’s releases began with early sales ranging from 1,316 for the Jovita Idar ornament to 1,534 for the Eleanor Roosevelt ornament. In contrast, the 2022 quarter ornaments, which launched the product line, saw early gains ranging from 1,768 for the Nina Otero-Warren ornament to 2,195 for the Maya Angelou ornament.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 485 numismatic products. The data revealed that 71 products outperformed their sales from the previous week, compared to 62 in the prior report. One product experienced a week-over-week increase of more than 1,000 units, compared to 3 in the previous report.
Four products posted negative weekly sales, down from ten in the previous report. Aside from the 2024 American Innovation Dollar Proof Set, which dropped by 2,722, the declines were modest.

The coin had “total” sales of 3,743! There were individual sales(+143), as well as another 90 of the 40 coin trays, sold to the ABPP customers. Obviously I just have to ask. Where on the Mint’s website is that figure of 90 units of 40 coin trays of 2024-S ASEs sold in the last sales reporting period posted, which is to say available to be seen by us? So far I haven’t been able to find it.
As far as returns to the Mint being broken down into the same category as the one they were sold in, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen that happen. A return appears to be a return.
Kaiser, that would be Item 24EM040 on the Mint’s weekly sales report (ASE-S Proof Bulk-40). Sales ending week of August 25= 913. Ending August 18= 823. Difference= 90.

Merci beaucoup for pointing me in the right direction. I rarely consult the Mint’s own weekly sales report anymore since I’m now accustomed to the simplicity and compactness of Mike Unser’s CoinNews.net version.
It’s rare, but it does happen. Most recently, 24EA040 (2024 W-Proof ASE Bulk-40) had minus 73 on Feb 11, 2024. The biggest one that I’ve seen was 23EA040 (2023 W-Proof ASE Bulk-40) with minus 2,001 on June 25, 2023. And some minor ones with the 2023 Unc Morgan and Peace Bulk-40s, of minus 13 and minus 5 on August 6, 2023.

Unless I am reading and/or understanding this incorrectly, that particular return on June 25, 2023, represents a total of 80,040 of the 2023-W Proof American Silver Eagles as 2,001 Bulk-40 going back to the Mint in one fell swoop. Wow!
Ok Kaiser, I’m eating crow on this one. I went back and double checked the sales reports and found the error on my spreadsheet. On the Mint’s sales report for the week ending June 25, 2023 there were 2,099 sales for 23EA040 but in error I plugged in 4,107 which was the sales for 22EA040. Hence when the July 2, 2023 sales came in at 2,106 for 23EA040 I erroneously tabulated a loss of 2,001. In reality there was no loss. However, the other instances that I mentioned still stand. Reminds me of the old saying “you don’t crap where you eat”. I never return searched coins to the same place where I get them. Rather, I will cash or deposit them in a branch where I don’t particular like the tellers (because of past bad attitudes in getting coins).

You know, I bet you could catch one heck of a big pike with one of these ornaments as a fish lure.
The biggest thing that jumped out of this list for me wasn’t the gains, but rather the loss, as in minus 2,722 for the 2024 AI$ Proof Set. I returned all of mine because of poor quality.

By the way, Major D, there was a time we could depend on the San Francisco Mint.
Here is an alternative angle regarding a comparison of the Precious Metals, one in which they are listed in order of how large of a gap there is between Bid and Ask:
Palladium $50.00
Gold $15.00
Platinum $15.00
Silver $ 00.30
And not long ago the premium on palladium was $100 per ounce!
How the mighty have fallen is one way of putting it. We’ll see what happens next.
