As anticipated, the U.S. Mint’s latest release, the set of twenty 2024 uncirculated coins, claimed the top spot as the week’s best-selling numismatic product. However, its start was one of the slowest in the product line since at least 2007 when CoinNews began keeping track.
Released on Aug. 29 for $29, the annually issued set of uncirculated coins achieved four-day starting sales of 136,631.
In contrast, last year’s set scored six-day opening sales of 164,710, which was one of the better debuts in the product line since at least 2007 when CoinNews began keeping track.

The 2024 US Mint Uncirculated Coin Set now has the third lowest opening week sales total in this product’s history. I guess that warrants a Reverse Bronze Medal.
Wait until the returns are reflected in the next week or two, perhaps a Silver Medal prize?! Maybe not. Would the replacement sets be considered a new sale, therefore offsetting the returned sets in the report? It appears that the quality is hit-or-miss with these sets, along with some other sets. Even the big boys aren’t too happy with the S-ASE Proofs. Or was it subscription “Sticker Shock” and then rejection from collectors, or both?
And the Prez Medal? Maybe those returns are related to Sticker Shock too?
Rick,
If the sales for the 2024 Unirculated Coin Set slow down some more, maybe it will even dethrone the two other “lowest sales ever” and come into the Reverse Gold.
I’m not sure how the official count works at the Mint, but in my own ledger it would be a matter of total Sets sold minus total Sets returned equals actual sales.
Kaiser, 2024 is set to be one of the lowest mintages in the history of the product line. Based on product limits it would be #2 at 190,000 to 2023’s #1 at 185,000. Sales for 2023 is currently at 183,363 and counting- but who knows, the Mint could have made less than that quantity for 2024 to put it at #1.
Major D,
The combination of likely being the #2 lowest mintage overall and holding what might well be a very desirable Nickel could make the 2024 US Mint Uncirculated Coin Set one of the must haves of the series.
Rick,
“It appears that the quality is hit-or-miss with these sets, along with some other sets.”
I don’t know if this is a relatively new phenomenon or what, but it does appear that while in the past when it came to the condition of individual Mint releases they were either in relatively good shape or alternatively not so much so across the board while now on the other hand the quality of Mint items seems to vary within the parameters of a release from coin to coin or set to set.
Kaiser, purely speculating here but I’d say there are big problems with the automated packaging machines– wherever there are contact points with coins.
Major D,
I for one would second that speculation. This is why certain special mintings are both individually hand loaded and hand removed.
Rick, wouldn’t the bigs be buying the Bulk-40’s? No returns there. Definitely some rank-and-file buyer rebellion going on I’d say.
Here’s my take on that;
1)The bigs are buying full, original & intact 40’s, lots of them.
2) The bigs are returning random, singe coins(lots of them) from the picked over 40’s. They’re returning coins that don’t cut the -70 mustard, only to be recycled back into whichever program the Mint chooses? There’s no way in my humble reasoning & opinion, that the bigs would keep ‘every single coin’ from their original & intact bulk 40 packages.
My turn for being devils advocate? Did you hear the news out of Washington DC? JK LOL Sorry Major, nothing but Love to you brother, Dead serious… Other than DC Comic medals and coins, I’ll hold my tongue… Anyhow, Rick and no offense Major D, I appreciate your 40- coin documented returns, I’m still feeling, some what like these coins purchased by the ABPP peeps, end up in the individual returns column??? However, besides gut feeling, I’ve got no concrete evidence. Now with that being said, it popped into my head today, that the only small hiccup w/that theory, is… Read more »
I would not put it past the Mint to go ahead and refill the 40 trays with some rejects that pass normal Mint standards after a big return, whether from the Bigs or average Joe. Give them a taste of what we put up with?
The public gets coins from the Mint and the big boys and supports both enterprises. Yet I’m not feeling that great about supporting either one of them at the moment. But, I’ll feel better soon enough!
Rick,
I would imagine trying to keep individual returns from Bulk-40 purchases and those from buyers of singles separated would be a well nigh impossible task for the Mint to accomplish. I’m guessing you’re correct in your assumption that as a result of the Mint’s system even some Bulk-40 purchasers may receive previously returned coins in their newly purchased “batches”.
CaliSkier, Your observation of the system makes perfect sense for those who absolutely need to have coins that are graded 70, and as I have described and explained in my reply to Major D those are the customers that the Big Buyers/Sellers clearly consider their bread and butter and as such a never ending source of profitable income for them. For those other coin purchasers who have much less, even very little or absolutely no concern as to whether or not their coins meet the Grade 70 standard, the very idea of being perpetually beholden to the ruling powers that… Read more »
Rick and CaliSkier, you may very well be right that the bigs get to pick through the 40s and returns singles. However, that would go against the Mint’s policy of not accepting partial returns–which is not to say that the Mint may have one set of return policy for the bigs and another for you and me. Or, more likely they order large quantities of 40s, cherry-pick /switch-out and return 40s back. The same likely happens with silver proof set and proof sets. This is not a level playing field nor an unmanipulated market IMO. But at least the Mint… Read more »
Major D,
If the Mint held the Big Buyers of Bulk-40s to the “return everything or nothing policy” that is applied to the likes of us hobbits then those purchasers would have to return complete loads of Bulk-40s to qualify them as “complete returns” and we know that’s not going to happen. Since the Bulk-40 purchasers pay their own way freight-wise by picking up their own orders it would seem the return of partial orders at the buyer’s expense wouldn’t be an issue or a problem for the Mint.
Rick, You’ve not just hit the nail on the head but the bullseye to boot. This strategy of the Big Purchasers/Sellers accomplishes two all-important goals for them: First, they are able to keep as many as possible of the potential grade 70 coins coming from the Mint out of the hands of the individual buyers, such as the coin collector or small flipper. Second, they are thereby able to compell the individual buyers to turn to them, the Big Purchasers/Sellers, to obtain at far greater expense than from the Mint one of the coins now slabbed 70. When all is… Read more »
Major D,
Didn’t we just recently determine that not all returns are recorded in such a way as to differentiate between the Bulk-40 and the individual returns?
Kaiser, I’m not sure what you mean. The Mint’s sales report account for both singles and Bulk-40, so presumably returns would count against sales for each separately.
Major D, I completely misspoke myself and sure enough, you caught me! Here, from Rick’s previous comment up above, is what I should have said: “The bigs are returning random, single coins (lots of them) from the picked over 40’s. They’re returning coins that don’t cut the -70 mustard…” The idea is that a lot of the coins leaving the Mint in Bulk 40s are on the other hand being returned to the Mint as single coins instead. I would submit that’s as likely a scenario as any for the actual count of returns being so much higher than would… Read more »
Nope, close but no cigar. Just like in the Olympics a medal gets awarded, then taken away. Missed the bronze being the fourth lowest debut sales since 2007 (after 2016, 2017, 2018).
Major D,
I’m fine with being corrected here as I want the facts, Ma’am, just the facts. The actual order for the sake of precision is 2018, 2016, 2017, 2024. No Medal this year.
Just got my uncirculated set, and it looks great. I only order that and the silver and clad proofs and have always been satisfied with the quality. But I kind of like to know how they sell older ones when they are “no longer” being sold. It changes totals, so I’m never sure just how many were issued.
Jim M said: “It changes totals, so I’m never sure just how many were issued.” First of all Jim, welcome to the board! Please continue to join us in commenting and sparking dialogue in our shared endeavor! The finalized totals may or may be not be audited totals, officially documented by the US Mint. It usually takes 2-4 years, from my experience, post LKS(last known sales) for the Mint to issue or publish finalized totals? So on many products you have to try and gauge the published, if available, “Product or Mintage Limits”. This is why one continually reads about… Read more »
I digress to other news from, “Numismatica Americana”, Not to be confused with John J Ford results on Google, Sir Kaiser. Did you know, are were you aware, that “Star” notes in the not too distant future, will cease production and that the only notes with “stars” in existence will be in limited supply, thereby increasing in value? Transition began in 2023 and current production(Series 2021) with regards to the $1 and $5 notes is currently happening.. These bills are the series, carrying the 2021 date, with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellin and U.S. Treasurer Chief Lynn Malerba signatures. Interestingly enough… Read more »
CaliSkier, It occasionally occurs to me how the banknote collecting sector of numismatics typically gets overlooked if not even entirely ignored on CoinNews.net, so I say many thanks to you for your contribution of a current look at what’s been happening in the paper currency world. While my own banknote collection is admittedly a very small portion of my humble personal numismatic enterprise I still value what there is of it and am therefore pleased you’ve been kind enough to provide us with some very up to date and relevant information regarding the future of paper currency. E1 says, “Rick, Some of my mint singles came in today. As for the mint set pennys….the D’s and Ps were similar. The photo below includes a D mint penny I got from the grocery store yesterday (left) and a D mint penny from the 2024 mint set. Both have spots and the finish on the mint set coin has a better finish but not proof like.” Thanks E1. This is a tough call between the two. It’s a great pic from your scope but at that distance it loses focus to the left & right. Some pixelation and lighting… Read more »
Rick, Unc Set coin #2, the surface is grainy and measled around the outer most radii of the field. So, the die must be worn. All of the unc set “D”s had this condition. Unfortunately, all of my 2024 unc set pennies have been put back for now. However, the album photo from yesterday shows the 2023 and 2024 unc set pennies. The slight distortion in Lincolns lower jaw and mouth on business strike coin # 1 is a parallax error in the scope. I did notice that the other day. Almost looks like a bugs bunny until I moved… Read more »
Wow, it is a close call. It may be the difference in photo lighting but when zoomed in it looks to me like the grocery store one (on the left) actually has more detail evident in the jacket folds and shoulder crease. Also, in the face eyebrow and cheek bone. I’d say more detail equates to better strike, which kind of goes against the Mint’s assertion that the sets have better strikes.
Major D, “I’d say more detail equates to better strike, which kind of goes against the Mint’s assertion that the sets have better strikes.” I would on the other hand contend what this in fact means is that without definitive, conclusive proof of the Mint engaging in a campaign of out and out prevarication regarding its published practice of applying Special Strikes to those Uncirculated Coins that are minted for enclosing in Annual Sets is that in a particular, occasional instance it is within the realm of possibility for a given Business Strike due to whatever reason, cause or happenstance to… Read more »
As in, for example changing out a worn out die to a brand new die.
A fresh new die installed, whether it be for a high end 2024 Flowing Hair Gold, or a 2024 bu 1C will sparingly & early-on produce the widely coveted Proof-Like, and Deep Mirror Proof-Like coins on an otherwise Mint State/BU coin. A new die will also, in limited quantities yield the most detailed, needle-sharp strikes on these coins, even the ‘cheap’ coins…
Q David Bowers stresses this often overlooked condition in many of his Cherry-Picking publications….
Ok Rick! Bam! Big money coin there. 70PL = $$$$
E1 it is!
Unfortunately it is not mine and I wish it was!
I was looking around for a PL coin to close out my comments on new dies.
A 70PL coin like that one, or a -69PL is on my wish list!
Rick,
Many thanks once again for doing me and everyone else here the great favor of filling in so many of the blanks of a very intriguing, puzzling and significant subject. When I brought up this particular aspect refgarding a seemingly implacable contradiction I immediately became aware of not being able to get any further into the “hows” and “whys” of it, something which you fortunately just accomplished.
Rick,
I say we just hand you an A+ for that quite remarkable collection of analytical material regarding those two examples of that Lincoln Cent. Bravo, kudos and huzzah!
Thanks Kaiser, however,
I’m usually not that ANALytical, and it’s subjective material as well. But it keeps me out of trouble, for now lol…
Rick,
Whether in River City or elsewhere your program of trouble avoidance seems indeed to be an exceptionally sound one. Keep on trucking…
Uh oh! Large ‘D’ and small ‘D’ variety? The mint marks look different is size and definition.
Agreed to both of your comments Major & E,
It’s a close call with what we have on hand at the moment. We have 2 different dies in different stages of die wear, possibly 2 different dies from two different master hubs(an unprofessional guess)? Combine that with lighting and photographic/display equipment anomalies as well. More coin examples, photographic experimentation, and further in-hand analysis would be interesting imo.
It is no wonder that the TPG’s don’t bother with a distinction between the two.
PS: Perhaps a #1 type nickel, and a #2 type nickel will yield some significant differences?
Rick,
For whatever you are trying to determine, maybe we should increase the scale, and start looking at the half dollars. A mission statement would be cool. I should have a number of the 2024 P&D half dollars this week.
Good idea with the half dollars, and no pressure on you as I’m being overly analytical I’ll admit. I’m trying to determine what level of spin if any, and why the Mint calls these coins in the unc set “collector strike” vs the “circulation quality” coins that we find in pocket change. No TPG will bother to distinguish the two, but the Mint does. I’m curious to learn if there is in fact, a notable physical difference between the two. So far, from what I gather from your photo above, is that the unc coin has an advantage, albeit a… Read more »
Rick, FYI – Optics 101: You might find this interesting At the center of the lens/image/Field of View, is a thing called the Focal Point. The image captured nearest the Focal Point has the LEAST amount of spherical aberration/distortion/error. The regions furthest from the Focal Point will have the highest degree of image error in the form of parallax. Even though the CCD array of the digital camera produces a perfect orthogonally linear and unforgiving digital reproduction, the lens of the camera (the optic) is the greatest natural contributor to image distortion and geometric error. Therefore, the geometric topology of… Read more »
Fantastic E1, I actually understood what you were explaining. It sounded technical, but it made perfect sense to me. Recalling the anomalies within the scope image, solidified your explanation further yet.
Thanks!
Rick and E 1,
I understood very little if any of the above. I am, however, able to take comfort in the idea that sometimes it is more beneficial and rewarding to be reminded of how much there is that one doesn’t know rather than all that one thinks one knows.
Kaiser said, “First, they(big boys)are able to keep as many as possible of the potential grade 70 coins coming from the Mint out of the hands of the individual buyers, such as the coin collector or small flipper. And that won’t be difficult, E 1, since it’s obvious you’ve got your chit together.
Thanks Kaiser. You’re now on Third…

Someone mentioned earlier a Kennedy Half from a 2024 Mint Set that looked Dracula bit Kennedy on the neck? I got one too. I don’t know how that could naturally occur in the Mint’s process. Appears to have occurred after the striking of the coin. Way to go Denver.
