Again, an absolutely amazing job by Major D for estimating the initial sales of the Morgan and Peace dollar proofs. He got sales correct within 1% of the actual sales for the Peace and around 2% for the Morgans. I’m impressed!
Kia99,
One of the many striking attributes of Major D is that you can be sure he is as sharp as a tack when it comes to working with numbers.
Thanks, Kia99. They came in about 5% lower than what I guesstimated but I’ll take it!
To clarify, I was guessing as to the standalone option. But my guesses sure look better with the Bulk40 thrown in.
Better! Only off by .97% Can’t get much better than that.
Well, as my father used to say when I brought home a high school report card with four As and a B, “Better luck next time.”
Weeding through 188 comments from a previous thread, E1 said: “Cali, Seller agreed to the return. Thank you for your support. Cheers” That’s great news E1! I could see how buying from that seller, that could easily happen, as they did have many Lincoln cents of all kinds to choose from and with you being into those Lincolns, wouldn’t be to hard too find something intriguing or interesting you’d like! to add to your collection. Good, Better, Best of Luck on your next coin purchase! PS Good luck on getting a MS68 or MS68+ grade, once you submit, on that… Read more »
Thanks again Cali.
Stand by for the next batch in a day or two or three.
I’ll keep you posted.
Look for my Pics.

Rick,
I hope all is well in SoCal.
Getting some really bad footage on the TV.
Keep us posted and stay safe.

That looks nasty, wouldn’t want to be around that! I’m enjoying the concrete jungle LAX, not.
Looking forward to seeing your latest coin delivery!
Here’s my contribution in keeping with the modern Porgan offerings.
The 2021-D, known for having more than it’s fair share of MS69’s.
All 3 of mine have the same random hairline scratches and scuffs(obverse on this one), two now have a new home in OGP, this one below I sent in several weeks ago. A predictable outcome, but I wanted a graded example anyway!
Good zoom on this image!
Rick, thanks for sharing! Too bad, those scratches on Liberties face. Also the ability to zoom in so close makes me wonder about how undefined or “blob”(rounded points) looking the stars are. A few even show no definition or blobs at the bottom “v” vertex, between points. Wondering if you feel lucky or are in agreement with the MS69 grade you received? With the face scratches(also scratch(?) parallel to face scratches, above eyelid), blob in V in star closest to the 2 in 2021, 2nd “U” in UNUM having a blob on top of upstroke to the right, scuff on… Read more »
CaliSkier,
I’m guessing you might have come up with an instrument combining the best attributes of a fine tooth comb and an electron microscope to be able to reveal some of the not at all so easy to find faults on this coin.
Yes I think they’re required to use a five-time zoom unlike the high-res image above, it’s super clear when they give you the true view photos.
I looked at it with about a 20x magnification and called it a 69, that’s what they gave me I’m happy..
“Don’t worry, be happy.”
You took it to heart, Rick; good for you!
Happy Happy! See, now you’re smiling too!
Or as my wife and I remark so often regarding our domestic environment, “There is a great deal of happiness in the room!”
Here’s a picture I took with my phone prior to selling it/then keeping/then grading it(same exact coin as above).
Many x lower rez, and still the rough Mint treatment is evident on her cap.
I would say that the way these 21- D coins were handled at that time was sub-par in the overall. I’ve gone through many rolls of bullion ASE,s with nary a hint of scuffs & reed contact compared to these ‘special’ coins!
Glad you got a few 70’s AK Bob! Great upside!
These indeed are entitled to be counted among the decidedly countertuitive mysteries of the Occident. Only the Shadow knows.
Rick,
I picked this up with the hopes of it being under graded. To dip or not to dip? I’m gonna dip it. Only $56. Might go Ultra Cameo – maybe. Yet, a “Star” and a “W” Cameo could be a good return. I have three coins inline for conservation and maybe another.
Peace Out
E 1,
In my very unschooled opinion that coin appears to have real potential.
E1, I’m liking the ‘conservation talk’… Judging by the holder itself, it has the potential to be undergraded! As you know from experience, the old holders means that the grading standards were tougher back then. That looks like a 1st gen NGC fat relic!? Or is it an old ANACS soapbox(known for great coins)? Please clarify…. The coin and it’s potential is all on you buddy, as it’s hard to tell what’s going on from here other than normal rim toning. If it’s got a little haze also, it’s time to dip! Will you re-submit for grading, or place it… Read more »
Rick,
The holder is an official ANA Holder and its pretty old. The coin is a solid cameo on both sides. Maybe a DCAM. I am going to dip it and hope that the mirrors clean up. I have other PCGS cameo Franklins but those are boxed up. If I get good results, I will probably send it off to PCGS. I’ll keep you posted.
The Reverse
E 1 and Rick,
Continue pursuing this course, my numismatically erudite friends, and you may well find yourselves endowed with an appellation typically reserved for a decidedly more expansive hobby, to wit astronomy, and as such be known henceforth as The Big Dippers.
Yes please do, thanks for the share!
Sure enough ANA = ANACS more or less, of which we know were the original, and top dog TPG back then. Times do change, but not necessarily those undergraded coins. Good pick and you could have an upgrade there!
Getting harder to differentiate between pictures from SoCal and Ukraine these days.
Reading these mint reports is like reading civil war battle reports who give a rats ass about most of the pre 2021 crap
A rat just might.
Deez Nuts do
Not just any old Nuts will do. The only good Nut is a Hot Nut.
No negative sales this week. It’s a bloomin’ miracle!
AKBob, others, you may find this video on YT by Ben “The Coin Geek” from Old Pueblo Coin enlightening? Really, any that may be or thinking of buying raw, ungraded examples of Pre 33 gold online. Yes this can be a good way to shop, however unless you are really experienced and very careful, you may end up losing a bunch of money, over time especially, due to fakes, counterfeits, fraudsters, or other unscrupulous characters peddling these fairly descent replica/counterfeit designs. Ben uses a scale, a set of digital calipers, a Sigma Metalytics PMV(Pecious Metal Verifyer) Pro and 20X digital(?)… Read more »
CaliSkier,
Don’t know what’s wrong but the link is not working for me. Oh well.
Other than that, it appears that buying gold coins on line from unknown parties might not be the best idea in the world after all. I’ll stick with the US Mint, not that I’m buying much from them anyway these days, especially since the most recent price hikes.
Thanks for the heads up Sir Kaiser! Perhaps I deleted too much of the link. I tested it out when I composed, however after checking I got the same as you, just a general link to YT. Hopefully this one will direct, straight to the video I mentioned. Another way to find it is to do a YT search for “The Coin Geek” and look for or search by the videos title: Fake! Testing & Inspecting a Counterfeit 1913-S $5 Gold Indian Coin
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ra7zrlj2DvY&pp=ygVDRmFrZSEgVGVzdGluZyAmIEluc3BlY3RpbmcgYSBDb3VudGVyZmVpdCAxOTEzLVMgJDUgR29sZCBJbmRpYW4gQ29pbg%3D%3D
Cali, thanks for the excellent advice/suggestion & video on YT!! I’m very Leary of purchasing ungraded/uncertified examples, especially gold coins!
I will use due diligence when purchasing gold coins. There are even graded/certified coins that are faked! What’s this World coming to?? Thx again!!
AK Bob, You are in a quandary for sure given your location. I presume there are no PNG coin shops up there. That almost makes mint purchases worth the “insurance “ value of guaranteed time Au. Back in the day when I was a big mint customer I always got the 5 coin set as I considered it the best pricing and gave me examples of all sizes. I’ve never had a gold coin certified. I’ve bought several from my LCS, but feel confident they’re real as they guarantee everything they sell – PNG members and over 35 years in… Read more »
DaveSWFL,
You’re very fortunate to have a local coin dealer you can trust and rely on. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to someone like that, and this situation puts collectors at the mercy of those who aren’t necessarily as knowledgeable and/or trustworthy when it comes to guaranteeing that any coins purchased from these other sources will be the real thing.
AKBob, As with so many other things we encounter in our modern world, whenever there is a dollar, ruble or yuan to be made from circumventing the usual and fair practices of technology and/or commerce someone will eventually if not even inevitably find a way to do it. As a result of this tension a sort of battle royal is being waged continuously between the honest man and the thief as to who will not just achieve but will in fact be successful in maintaining the upper hand in this ongoing contest and there is unfortunately never any assurance or… Read more »
You’re welcome, CaliSkier; always willing and ready to help! The link is working fine now, but the material it led me to was rather disturbing in regard to how difficult it is to detect counterfeits these days. The mini-tutorial taught me that recent efforts of the coin counterfeiters have achieved an unprecedented level of sophistication and expertise and as a result it’s getting ever more difficult for collectors to weed out the fake from the authentic coins, and that this even applies to the experts.
Cali,
You have to remove everything from the “?” down and that includes the “?.”
Try that next time. Also, you can test the link in the browser after by removing the unwanted portion and pressing “Enter.”
I just tested it. That only works on eBay.
YouTube is a little tricker
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=ra7zrlj2DvY
For Youtube, it looks like you need to remove everything from the first “&” on down and that includes the first “&.”
Lets see if it works.
Yup, it works
Thanks for the YT hack on posting just the essential part of a link! Also as Rick noted, looking forward to your next posted pictures and grading results! Now that I’ve seen a few of the results and grades achieved/received by yourself and Rick, that 2024 Kennedy pic you posted, perhaps a MS69 is attainable??? That would be awesome if you’re lucky enough to get rewarded for your time, trouble and additional financial investment to have it slabbed? Good Luck and “may the grades be ever in your favor”!
Thanks Cali,
The power of collective minds far exceeds that of the individual.
Cheers
Barring, of course, the notable exception of the mob mentality.
Cali,
Well, some good news on 2024 uncirculated mint sets. I received a couple more P&D Lincoln Cent pairs that I purchased as mint set singles. One 2024-D was a bonified Proof Like coin. So, 2024-D Lincoln Shield Cent Proof Like specimens do exist.
Peace Out
Congrats, E 1, on being able to obtain such a beauty!
Looks like a keeper E1..!…..
Talk about a Premium Gem 1C Album in the works, Bam!
Thanks Rick
I have a pretty good cache of those now. Done with the cents for a while.
Cheers Bud
A new “variant” to consider. Congratulations!
I got 10 rolls of ‘24d cents. All prooflike. I have many recent abU rolls, now what the F do undo w them long term. USM reopened mint set sales, another FOMO scam, likely 50m to be minted I last 1/4 o year
I’ve received both the Morgan and Peace proofs, probably PF68s. The S on the Morgan looks like a micro S. Anyone else notice how tiny the mintmark on the Morgan Proofs is?
Antonio,
Was just wondering if you think the proofs are worth the money. I’m thinking about getting the reverse proof set later in the Fall, but haven’t pulled the trigger on anything from the mint this year.
Craig,
I’m going out on a limb here, but I don’t think these proofs will ever go gangbusters in the resale department. However, that being said, if these coins appeal to you as a collectable I suppose you could certainly do a lot worse.
Kaiser,
We must be on the same limb! I don’t think any of these will be winners on the secondary market, but that being said, I don’t collect for the purpose of reselling for a profit. I do like Reverse Proofs and will probably buy that set for my one and only purchase from the mint this year.
Craig,
That is precisely why we can be aware without being alarmed; we collect for the sheer joy of the hobby and as such have no need of assurances of profitablity. As for Reverse Proofs, they are a uniquely attractive version of coins and their singular appearance provides its own particular form of pleasure. By the way, the limb, while getting ever longer, seems to also be strengthening its connection to reality.
From what I’m seeing, the proofs are being offered for $179 each, which is a premium over the $95 Mint price. We will make some money off these coins, whether the value holds over the years has yet to be seen.
Antonio, I’d say about 25-33% smaller. Wonder why the Mint decided to miniaturize the S mintmark?
Now let’s hope that we see some other S proofs come to market with a regular, and/or large S…
And there’s our first VAM coins in the tribute series! I’m all for something like that, especially if a certain S is scarce….
The Ss on my Peace proofs look normal, only my Morgan proof looks micro. Reminds me of that commercial, “Where’s the beef?”
hummm, now that you mention it Antonio! It looks the same size as on the 2023, but a little smaller than on a 1878. I’m not absolutely sure that the proof finish isn’t altering my perception of size. What really stands out to me is that the bottom of the “S” is fatter than the top.
Kia99, Antonio, Rick and CaliSkier,
If I was a conspiracy enthusiast I might suggest that the Mint has hit upon an extremely successful way to direct everyone’s attention away from its high prices and the marks on its coins.
Yes Antonio, I did notice what you are talking about. It’s definitely a micro S! Could it be a variation? Anyone else care to comment?
Just checked out the new improved mint pricing they are fuggin nutz
But if you look at it from another angle, they are nuggin futz
Don’t worry brother, the mints ‘customer appreciation’ event starts at 12:00 today. Yeah…you can save up to 30% off select insanely priced coins.
Craig,
With that “sale” in our rearview mirror we realize how “appreciated” we really are.
