U.S. Mint Unveils Candidate Designs for 2025 Superman Coin and Medals

73

The United States Mint has unveiled candidate designs for its highly anticipated 2025 Superman coin and medals, the first in the upcoming Comic Art Super Heroes series. This program, born from the U.S. Mint’s licensing partnership with DC Comics, will showcase nine iconic superheroes over the course of three years, beginning with Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman in 2025.

These candidate designs mark the debut of the series, which will feature superheroes on 24-karat gold coins, .999 fine silver medals, and non-precious metal clad medals. The series will continue through 2026 and 2027 with six additional DC comic book characters yet to be revealed.

Before the designs are finalized, they will undergo review by the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) on Sept. 19, followed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) on Sept. 24. Both bodies will provide recommendations to help finalize the designs, ensuring they align with both artistic standards and public interest.

All obverse designs for the coins and medals in Comic Art Super Heroes series will be created and sculpted by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna. The reverse designs will be crafted by one of the Mint’s Medallic Artists, working under Menna’s artistic direction.

The mint raised the prices on gold coins as expected today. Now even less of a reason to take part in tomorrow’s risky purchase of possibly damaged gold coins that can’t be returned.

Kaiser Wilhelm

East Coast Guru,

As if we needed yet another reason for caution, right?

Kaiser Wilhelm

Here’s my personal take in regard to the look of the gold coins as opposed to that of the silver and clad medals. The proposed designs are already so busy to begin with that with all the words and numbers inscribed on the gold coin that particular and by far most expensive version of the Mint’s Superman trio ends up being an overly-congested mess. The medals on the other hand, due to their not being plagued by such an overwhelming multitude of inscriptions, have a much cleaner looking appearance and as such are by leaps and bounds more appealing to… Read more »

Kaiser,

Just looks like more junk coins that I have absolutely no interest in.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Craig,

While I found the counter-intuitive contrast between the gold coin design and that of the silver and clad medals somewhat intriguing, I agree with you in that my interest in regard to this proposed release does not in any way extend to actually having any thoughts about actually buying these coins and medals.

John Q. Coinage

No interest, and folks w the $ to buy would pool for a Superman #1

Kaiser Wilhelm

It just occurred to me that the simple fact that we’re discussing the particulars of how a freaking “Superman” ought to be presented on US Mint coins and medals shows we’re well on our way to lala land.

Rich

So… If I go crazy, then will you still call me Superman?

CaliSkier

Yes we will Rick, providing you are not 1, not 2, but 3 Doors Down! LOL

Sam-I-am

Speaking of Superman, could we persuade the USM to strike a limited special issue in “Kryptonite”? Or perhaps “Unobtainium”?

Sam-I-am

Or is that considered “culturally insensitive”?

Kaiser Wilhelm

Oh no, are folks from Krypton coming across the border now?

Michael

In Chinesium. Everything’s made in China.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Since from the looks of things we’re well on our way, why not?

CaliSkier,

This was my “inner child’s” reaction to yesterday’s overblown Mint “30% Off Sale”.

This is what I found will be on the Fire Sale. Not many good deals here since the sale prices are generally more than the items cost when first issued. sharks2th,

Serves me right for not checking in at this site before the sale. All the information you’ve provided above could have served me quite well; instead, I had to go in blind to the nature of the proceedings. Oh well.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Just as an aside, sharks2th, your amazingly elaborate detailing of the Mint’s 30% Off Sale in a series of iterations definitely gave me deja vu all over again.

CaliSkier

Major D said previously about todays “Customer Appreciation Sale”: “It leads me to think that if you do not get the email then you are not eligible for the sale. I mean, it is stated to be a “special customer appreciation sales event”. If anyone can get access, then it’s not as advertised.” The page is up! Come one, come ALL, Hurry, Hurry, Hurry, Step Right Up! No email needed and assuredly with no HHL’s in place, who stands a chance at beating out those “Big Boys”/AP’s/ABPP members for a Hot Potato? Good Luck and may your, no return purchases… Read more »

Cali – I had made the furniture store comparison and it seems like this is exactly what they are doing since I do not see any of the items cheaper than the original issue prices. The Innovation Dollars may be less, but all of the precious metals items appear equal or higher than the original issue price. The 1/10 Liberty Gold was around $205 when issued and I passed because the markup then was high. In hindsight, I should have gotten one then, but I am not paying an extra $100+ to get one now. The 2022 W Unc ASE… Read more »

Precisely on the money, sharks2th, but unfortunately so theirs, not ours.

VA Bob

“Customer Appreciation Sale” We appreciate you so much we are only going to fleece you 100% instead of 150%. – US Mint.

Kaiser Wilhelm

VA Bob,

If this was supposed to be a “Customer Appreciation Sale” then why did it seem instead like they were telling us we could just go ahead and flagellate ourselves?

Kaiser Wilhelm

CaliSkier,

Once the Big Boys of all manner and stripes got their huge automated shovels working the page was emptied of products faster than you could say “Greed”!

Kaiser Wilhelm

CaliSkier,

Much to my surprise I was allowed into the Mint’s 30% Off Sale sans an email invitation. Let’s hope such numismatically-inclined wonders will never cease!

AKBob

Well, I looked at what all was on “sale”! There was nothing there that I was interested in and like I said previously, the Big companies, AP’s, etc. got “first right of refusal”, so all that’s left are the crumbs. Like others have said too, the “sale price” is higher than the original release price. If the Mint made money at the original release price, why not just let the sale prices be minimally the release price. They should have sold these below the original release price tag!! That’s just my opinion. They will still have those gold coins left… Read more »

The only thing I was interested in AKBob was a few AI$ rolls, but it wasn’t even close (and certainly no cigar) before gone, snatched from my basket as I tried to pay. No sense in staying upset, but it did expose how much I can do without the whole thing. In a moment of clarify I have come to realize that The Mint has taken the joy of collecting from me, as I no longer want anything that it produces. The Mint’s fine print disclaimer says it all for me: The Government does not warrant the condition, quality, merchantability,… Read more »

Sam-I-am

Major D,

So sorry to hear that you got shafted by the Mint. I had the same thing happen to me in 2021, trying to buy the D/S Morgans. They were in my basket, then they weren’t. I’ve bought nothing from the Mint since I managed to snag 3 Morgan P’s and a Peace later that year. It’s not worth the stress. If I want Mint products, I’ll go to my LCS and see what they have or can scrounge on their own. My real sympathies, my friend. Stick around, please; I enjoy your company here.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Sam-I-am,

Perhaps we as a group are just too hopeful and trusting and can’t seem to learn our lesson that rarely anything good can result from dealing with the Mint.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D,

It looks like this bogus Mint sale left as sour a taste in your mouth as it did in mine.

Kaiser Wilhelm

By the way, Major D, you’re a big part of the “scene” here, so I would hope you would consider staying to discuss coin collecting, just not in regard to the Mint.

Rich

Major D, I echo Sir Kaiser’s comment. After him, I consider you to be 2nd in Command here. Your contributions to this site are immeasurable, and your knowledge, insight and perspective, as well as the information you pass on is of great value and much appreciated by all of us.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rich,

Thank you so very much for joining what I hope will be a mighty chorus asking Major D to perhaps re-think his decision to go on a sabbatical from this site due not only to his utter disappointment with the Mint’s recent dud of a sale but also with the lack of transparency of its operations and the quality of its products in general of late.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D,

I do believe more than one of us, myself included, took another nasty hit alongside the head with the US Mint’s cudgel of despair. What a shame.

Kaiser Wilhelm

AKBob,

I really appreciate and enjoy the fact that you always call’s ’em as you sees ’em.

AKBob

There isn’t even a waiting room being used now, that’s just how many folks are interested in this “Super Sale”!!! This has been pathetic! Way to go Ventris! You really knocked this one out of the Park! You still lost tho!!

Major D

WOW, that “Customer Appreciation” Sale, er VAULT Sale was a HUGE, HUGE disappointment. I’m more pissed at the Mint now then I was before, and that’s saying A LOT. Very few products and not much available at that. Rolls all gone in microseconds. Promoted as a “special” event yet was open to everyone. What a total sham. I got in a waiting room queue early this morning for this? I’m mad at myself for falling for it. As for this Superman crap, the Mint can shove it far up where the sun don’t shine, and Green Lantern can’t find. What… Read more »

Sam-I-am

AKBob, Major D,

I told my wife about the lack of sales and interest in the the 2017 Liberty gold; then I showed her the photo. Her reply? “Does the Mint not know or not care that American coin collectors are a bunch of grumpy old white men who do NOT want an image of a P.O.’d black woman on their coins?” I’m still laughing, since she certainly nailed me, for one! I had to tell her, the answer is “Yes”.

Antonio

When I do sell my coins, who will be interested in large cents, half dimes and silver dollars and bullion? I suppose that’s why it’s a hobby. It’s not meant to make any money.

Major D

Antonio,

I guess we should all call it hoarding then, because that what I would call collecting things without any retained or expanded value. For instance, care to see my paper bag collection?

Sam-I-am

Antonio,

I have no easy answer to your question. I would love to see some pics of your collection, since I have almost none of them…but I’m one of the COB’s (cranky old boogers) that my wife referred to. Of course, I’ve been a COB for the last 30 years; I just get COBbier as I get older!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Major D and Antonio,

I would say accumulating without purpose is hoarding, doing so purely for pleasure is collecting and with the focus on monetary value investing.

Sam-I-am

Kaiser, I like your definitions/distinctions!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Why thank you, Sam-I-am; it’s very kind of you to say that!

East Coast Guru

Sam i am, prices for the 2017 and 2018 gold Liberty coins are cheaper at the dealers than at the mint even with this fake price savings event.

Kaiser Wilhelm

East Coast Guru,

Maybe it was just my expectations but I thought this “sale” was a letdown.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Sam-I-am,

The saying “Each to his own” applies in a big way here. While I am about as grumpy and cranky an old white man as can be I found the design on that 2017 Liberty Gold Coin (#1 in the world by vote) to be exceptionally appealing.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Determined, not angry.

Kaiser,

“No accounting for taste”, said the old lady as she kissed the cow! One of my Grandmother’s favorite sayings. Then again, she loved sweetbreads, which ain’t sweet & ain’t bread!

Kaiser Wilhelm

Sam-I-am,

No, there certainly isn’t. I learned that lesson in the hardest way possible when I realized my first marriage was over the day of the wedding yet stayed to suffer insult after deceit for twenty years. PTSD comes in many ugly shapes and forms.

Sam-I-am

Kaiser,

I’m sorry to hear of your suffering for two decades. I got very lucky – I married my best friend, and we celebrated our 44th anniversary a couple of weeks ago.

I can identify with ugliness in life; I won’t go into details here, but I’ve seen just how nasty people can be to each other. OTOH, I firmly believe that reasonable people can agree to disagree without being disagreeable about it!

I certainly meant no disrespect for your opinion, thoughtfully expressed.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Sam-I-am, Congratulations on your 44th anniversary and the very best of wishes for many more years of such outstanding happiness! I very much appreciate your kind words regarding my previous misfortune. These things happen, and my wonderful life with my current wife of 32 years (on Halloween, yes) more than makes up for it; I consider myself blessed beyond belief! What you said about being reasonable and willing to come to terms is so very applicable to the well being of relationships. I experienced none of that the first time around; in my present day relationship, on the other hand,… Read more »

“Rolls all gone in microseconds.”

Thanks for posting that! Good to know I wasn’t the only one upset about how fast the Rolls all disappeared while the overpriced and unwanted stuff hung around forever.

Major D,

Sometimes life is like a box of really bad chocolates, full of crap. Thanks, Ventris.

E 1, Cali, Rick, and any others with better knowledge than me;

Should I have my 1991 1/2-oz AGE proof graded/slabbed, or keep it in the OGP? This was back when the Mint issued really nice OGP – velvet clamshell and all. Really made you feel good about having a special coin.

All opinions welcome, especially with your logic/reasoning laid out. Thanks in advance!

East Coast Guru

I asked the same question from a dealer at a show. He said keep it in the OGP. Unless you are positive it will be a 70. A 69 is worth the same as OGP. Plus when people put proof coins into a IRA, they must be in OGP. I just checked the websites for their buy back prices and based on that, keep it in OGP. 70’s barely get any additional money. Lastly, if the 91 half ounce was bu, you might have a nice chunk of change there.

Sam-I-am

ECG,

Thanks for the valuable information. This is one of the reasons I keep coming back here; I get to pick the brains of people smarter & more experienced than me! You just saved me the cost of grading (what I think) is a very pretty coin as-is. Thanks again.

Rick

Sam I don’t know enough about the AGE series to be of any help, but EC, and E1 have the ideal common sense approach on your coin, and it’s a beautiful coin indeed!

E 1

Sam,

You can get that AGE certified whenever you choose, be it today, tomorrow, or a decade from now. There’s no need to hurry. The excitement of having it slabbed isn’t necessary. Personally, I value the mint’s Original Government Packaging from that era and would myself keep it in its highly protective and appealing case.

Cheers
