The United States Mint has unveiled candidate designs for its highly anticipated 2025 Superman coin and medals, the first in the upcoming Comic Art Super Heroes series. This program, born from the U.S. Mint’s licensing partnership with DC Comics, will showcase nine iconic superheroes over the course of three years, beginning with Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman in 2025.
These candidate designs mark the debut of the series, which will feature superheroes on 24-karat gold coins, .999 fine silver medals, and non-precious metal clad medals. The series will continue through 2026 and 2027 with six additional DC comic book characters yet to be revealed.
Before the designs are finalized, they will undergo review by the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) on Sept. 19, followed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) on Sept. 24. Both bodies will provide recommendations to help finalize the designs, ensuring they align with both artistic standards and public interest.
All obverse designs for the coins and medals in Comic Art Super Heroes series will be created and sculpted by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna. The reverse designs will be crafted by one of the Mint’s Medallic Artists, working under Menna’s artistic direction.
The mint raised the prices on gold coins as expected today. Now even less of a reason to take part in tomorrow’s risky purchase of possibly damaged gold coins that can’t be returned.
Kaiser,
Just looks like more junk coins that I have absolutely no interest in.
No interest, and folks w the $ to buy would pool for a Superman #1
So… If I go crazy, then will you still call me Superman?
Yes we will Rick, providing you are not 1, not 2, but 3 Doors Down! LOL
Speaking of Superman, could we persuade the USM to strike a limited special issue in “Kryptonite”? Or perhaps “Unobtainium”?
Or is that considered “culturally insensitive”?
In Chinesium. Everything’s made in China.
Truth, justice and the American way Kaiser 😉
NICEEEEEEEE 😉
strong resemblance to my 11th Grade design project easy PA$$
They’re ba-ack… There are a few 2024 Uncirculated Sets available at the Pre-Fire sale!
I found just the coins I wanted = none. 😀
This is what I found will be on the Fire Sale. Not many good deals here since the sale prices are generally more than the items cost when first issued. There could be a few more items, but these are the only items currently visible. Major D said previously about todays “Customer Appreciation Sale”: “It leads me to think that if you do not get the email then you are not eligible for the sale. I mean, it is stated to be a “special customer appreciation sales event”. If anyone can get access, then it’s not as advertised.” The page is up! Come one, come ALL, Hurry, Hurry, Hurry, Step Right Up! No email needed and assuredly with no HHL’s in place, who stands a chance at beating out those “Big Boys”/AP’s/ABPP members for a Hot Potato? Good Luck and may your, no return purchases… Read more »
Cali – I had made the furniture store comparison and it seems like this is exactly what they are doing since I do not see any of the items cheaper than the original issue prices. The Innovation Dollars may be less, but all of the precious metals items appear equal or higher than the original issue price. The 1/10 Liberty Gold was around $205 when issued and I passed because the markup then was high. In hindsight, I should have gotten one then, but I am not paying an extra $100+ to get one now. The 2022 W Unc ASE… Read more »
“Customer Appreciation Sale” We appreciate you so much we are only going to fleece you 100% instead of 150%. – US Mint.
Well, I looked at what all was on “sale”! There was nothing there that I was interested in and like I said previously, the Big companies, AP’s, etc. got “first right of refusal”, so all that’s left are the crumbs. Like others have said too, the “sale price” is higher than the original release price. If the Mint made money at the original release price, why not just let the sale prices be minimally the release price. They should have sold these below the original release price tag!! That’s just my opinion. They will still have those gold coins left… Read more »
The only thing I was interested in AKBob was a few AI$ rolls, but it wasn’t even close (and certainly no cigar) before gone, snatched from my basket as I tried to pay. No sense in staying upset, but it did expose how much I can do without the whole thing. In a moment of clarify I have come to realize that The Mint has taken the joy of collecting from me, as I no longer want anything that it produces. The Mint’s fine print disclaimer says it all for me: The Government does not warrant the condition, quality, merchantability,… Read more »
Major D,
So sorry to hear that you got shafted by the Mint. I had the same thing happen to me in 2021, trying to buy the D/S Morgans. They were in my basket, then they weren’t. I’ve bought nothing from the Mint since I managed to snag 3 Morgan P’s and a Peace later that year. It’s not worth the stress. If I want Mint products, I’ll go to my LCS and see what they have or can scrounge on their own. My real sympathies, my friend. Stick around, please; I enjoy your company here.
Major D, I echo Sir Kaiser’s comment. After him, I consider you to be 2nd in Command here. Your contributions to this site are immeasurable, and your knowledge, insight and perspective, as well as the information you pass on is of great value and much appreciated by all of us.
There isn’t even a waiting room being used now, that’s just how many folks are interested in this “Super Sale”!!! This has been pathetic! Way to go Ventris! You really knocked this one out of the Park! You still lost tho!!
WOW, that “Customer Appreciation” Sale, er VAULT Sale was a HUGE, HUGE disappointment. I’m more pissed at the Mint now then I was before, and that’s saying A LOT. Very few products and not much available at that. Rolls all gone in microseconds. Promoted as a “special” event yet was open to everyone. What a total sham. I got in a waiting room queue early this morning for this? I’m mad at myself for falling for it. As for this Superman crap, the Mint can shove it far up where the sun don’t shine, and Green Lantern can’t find. What… Read more »
AKBob, Major D,
I told my wife about the lack of sales and interest in the the 2017 Liberty gold; then I showed her the photo. Her reply? “Does the Mint not know or not care that American coin collectors are a bunch of grumpy old white men who do NOT want an image of a P.O.’d black woman on their coins?” I’m still laughing, since she certainly nailed me, for one! I had to tell her, the answer is “Yes”.
When I do sell my coins, who will be interested in large cents, half dimes and silver dollars and bullion? I suppose that’s why it’s a hobby. It’s not meant to make any money.
Antonio,
I guess we should all call it hoarding then, because that what I would call collecting things without any retained or expanded value. For instance, care to see my paper bag collection?
Antonio,
I have no easy answer to your question. I would love to see some pics of your collection, since I have almost none of them…but I’m one of the COB’s (cranky old boogers) that my wife referred to. Of course, I’ve been a COB for the last 30 years; I just get COBbier as I get older!
Kaiser, I like your definitions/distinctions!
Sam i am, prices for the 2017 and 2018 gold Liberty coins are cheaper at the dealers than at the mint even with this fake price savings event.
Kaiser,
“No accounting for taste”, said the old lady as she kissed the cow! One of my Grandmother’s favorite sayings. Then again, she loved sweetbreads, which ain’t sweet & ain’t bread!
Kaiser,
I’m sorry to hear of your suffering for two decades. I got very lucky – I married my best friend, and we celebrated our 44th anniversary a couple of weeks ago.
I can identify with ugliness in life; I won’t go into details here, but I’ve seen just how nasty people can be to each other. OTOH, I firmly believe that reasonable people can agree to disagree without being disagreeable about it!
I certainly meant no disrespect for your opinion, thoughtfully expressed.
E 1, Cali, Rick, and any others with better knowledge than me;
Should I have my 1991 1/2-oz AGE proof graded/slabbed, or keep it in the OGP? This was back when the Mint issued really nice OGP – velvet clamshell and all. Really made you feel good about having a special coin.
All opinions welcome, especially with your logic/reasoning laid out. Thanks in advance!
I asked the same question from a dealer at a show. He said keep it in the OGP. Unless you are positive it will be a 70. A 69 is worth the same as OGP. Plus when people put proof coins into a IRA, they must be in OGP. I just checked the websites for their buy back prices and based on that, keep it in OGP. 70’s barely get any additional money. Lastly, if the 91 half ounce was bu, you might have a nice chunk of change there.
ECG,
Thanks for the valuable information. This is one of the reasons I keep coming back here; I get to pick the brains of people smarter & more experienced than me! You just saved me the cost of grading (what I think) is a very pretty coin as-is. Thanks again.
Sam I don’t know enough about the AGE series to be of any help, but EC, and E1 have the ideal common sense approach on your coin, and it’s a beautiful coin indeed!
Sam,
You can get that AGE certified whenever you choose, be it today, tomorrow, or a decade from now. There’s no need to hurry. The excitement of having it slabbed isn’t necessary. Personally, I value the mint’s Original Government Packaging from that era and would myself keep it in its highly protective and appealing case.
Cheers
Didn’t see that LGBTQ+ Superman design, reverse would have the kiss w his lover…..
