U.S. Mint sales were elevated last week, aided by a customer appreciation promotion offering up to 30% off select products. Still, the main highlights for collectors in the Mint’s latest figures are likely the 2024-S Proof Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars, which saw their first full week of results.
The pair initially opened with a four-day total of 353,901 coins, split between 185,542 Morgan dollars and 168,359 Peace dollars. In the first week following their debut, their combined total increased by 17,767 to 371,668 coins, with updated figures of 194,394 (+8,852) for the Morgan dollar and 177,274 (+8,915) for the Peace dollar. The individual options saw stronger gains compared to the 40-coin bulk options, though the difference was relatively small.
Although the appreciation promo lifted many older products to the top of the Mint’s weekly sales, with the new Morgan and Peace dollars also among them, the 2024 Proof Set led the pack, increasing by 6,612 to reach 286,884 after just over six months on the market. The just-over-six-month mark of this year’s Proof Set is an ideal point to examine how the 2023 Proof Set performed during its own first six months. Sales for the 2023 set were much stronger, outpacing this year’s by more than 81,000, with a total of 368,534.

Fourteen products experienced a week-over-week increase of more than 1,000 units, compared to 3 in the previous report.
In addition, six products posted negative weekly sales, compared to none — a rarity — in the previous report. Four of the five 2024 quarter ornaments saw losses ranging from 61 to 66 each, while the 2024 Mint Set sharply declined by 9,850.

Goosing sales for the flock & bookkeeping…. Clad proof sets, buy em if you want them but never expect to make money. GOLD SILVER popppppo
John Q. Coinage,
There are likely many reasons people collect coins. Here are just three of them:
1) They like coins, period.
2) They think of them as an investment.
3) They like coins and hope they will be worth more down the line.
I happen to find myself in category 1, which is why my only concerns when I buy a coin are that it appeals to me and I can afford it. Nevertheless, I applaud those who can afford the sorts of coins that are almost certain to increase in value; more power to them.
Kaiser et al, I can think of some others like 4) too much time on my hands (“It’s tickin’ away with my sanity…”), and 5) it’s something to do when there isn’t a good NFL or MLB game on TV.
I’ll be back when the next annual report comes out- to cast more shade on the Mint. Until then, to borrow a great saying from AK Bob: Good luck, ALL!
Major D, YOU’RE HERE! Welcome back, my friend! Not only have you returned, I see that you’re immediately ready to jump into the center ring of the circus with your contributions to the comment column’s current thread. Hooray for that also! I understand this is only a temporary reincarnation, but it’s still really good to hear from you. Be well and happy until we meet again! Now, as to your 4) and 5), I can’t claim the former since even in retirement I am never at a loss to find something to keep me occupied, and I don’t really require… Read more »
Kaiser, I will help you out here buddy… . 4) They consider them works of art. 5) They consider them historical artifacts that tell a story. 6) They consider them chronological bookmarks of their past and their ancestors past. 7) They find the coin manufacturing processes fascinating. 8) They love precious metals or anything made of metal. 9) They love all the numbers. 10) Their whole family is into it. 11) It is an intellectual pursuit. 12) It is a good, clean, safe, and fun endeavor that requires skill. 13) They are in politics and everyone in Washington collects coins.… Read more »
E 1,
Not only did you expand magnificently upon my three spare reasons to collect coins but you put my own [apparent lack of] powers of imagination in this case to shame. If I somehow lack the drive to put my brain into a high enough gear to even begin to match such a noteworthy achievement then the blame lands entirely upon me. But aside from this “woe is me” nonsense, I must say those are not only some excellent but also truly inventive impetuses for engaging with coins!
E1, Thanks for sharing some great reasons for coin collecting. I can tell that you’re an experienced, patient collector and not someone on the sidelines analyzing, whining, and criticizing everything that the Mint does all the time. Kudos. I’ll need to get back to you if I come up with something else to add to your list. In the meantime I’ll easily agree with you on.. #4, 5, 11, 12, and especially #15, 16, and 17! If I buy a coin, then I have invested in it financially and expect at least some return on that investment. The enjoyment of… Read more »
Very well put, Rick, and by that I mean both your observation about how some of the perpetual complaining about the US Mint can get not only tiresome but essentially pointless and your clearly open and honest views on being insistent about getting a return for whatever investment you make for the items you add to your coin collection.
Hey Gents! Back again just to complete the circle on that bogus Mint “Appreciation”/Vault Sale. As I suspected might happen, there were no sales reported in the latest sales report on any of the AI$ rolls and bags (2018 and 2020). Nor was there anything reported on the 2018 Uncirculated Set, 2019 Bush Coin+Spouse Medal Set, 2019 NA C+C Set, and 2019 Birthday Set. As for the 2021 NA$ Bags, only 1 reported sale for each of the P and D bags. Oh, and nothing reported on the 5-oz ATB Lowell either. This means of the 34 product Cat# listed,… Read more »
Major D,
As if your numismatic detection powers weren’t already quite clearly outstanding, you’ve now presented us with yet another exceptionally alert and astute example of your ability to dissect the US Mint’s seemingly obligatory attempts at obfuscation.
Not that there could have been too many available, however the US Mint did not or were unable to report sales for the Native American $1 Coin & Currency Set 2019 product. The LKS was at 49,964 out of a product limit of 50,000 for their last reported sales on the January 30, 2022 sales report, before sales were no longer reported beginning in February of that same year. Actually surprising that they had any available for the “Customer Appreciation Sale”. This due to, that in theory, the maximum they could have technically had available would have been 36. Also,… Read more »
Sale ended at 12:00 noon. Good riddance! As for how many of 19NR could have been avail, we know that a product limit hasn’t stopped the Mint from selling more (e.g. 24GRF). Also, the Mint can (and has) added back old product numbers to the sales reports in the past (e.g. the Vault sale of Nov 2023). Those C+C sets can be easily had on eBay. My lowest paid is $8.36 at auction delivered.
Major D,
That’s one thing you can always count on the Mint for; when they fudge something up they tend to make sure they do it in a big way!
Major D,
“Those C+C sets can be easily had on ebay. My lowest paid is $8.36 at auction delivered.”
My only question is, did it come with the dollar bill jammed half way into the margin?
CaliSkier,
I remember that now! The $1 Bills in my two were jammed so far into the packaging there wasn’t the slightest hope of adjustment or correction. I sent both of mine back and never got another; that first big disappointment was more than sufficient for me!
American Women’s Autographs

E 1, don’t mind me as I’m just a momentary visitor from this point on, but isn’t soft-porn of the numismatic variety enough for this site?
Major D,
Don’t mind me.
A gift for our visitor.
One for the road.
It’s completely irrational, but in Puritan-inspired America exposed female breasts are considered pornographic. Go figure.
Alright! Plus, CN won’t take it down.
As always, simply perfect!
I am a coin collector……not investor. I like the storied history of U.S. coins. What I DON’T like is the so called “sale” that was clearly a money grab in my opinion. Anyone who collects most likely had the coins on “sale” already. The mints book keeping must be a sight to behold. Bottom line….if you have left over coins on Jan 1st….melt em and start from ZERO. Give us accurate mintages and accountibility. Coins of any given year should only be sold the year issued. I know…its a pipe dream.
Domenic, I agree with your overall sentiment. But it would mean producing fewer coins and having the price go up. Consider the per unit cost to produce is variable: it goes up the fewer made or goes down the more made (economies-of-scale). Else, there is a cost to destroying product, with would also get baked into the pricing.
Agree. Probably why the price of 3” bronze medals is so high. They only make a few of them.
Or, East Coast Guru, our sorely benighted Mint is coating solid 24K gold planchets with bronze to produce the small numbers required.
Kaiser, you’ll appreciate this one: “which”, not “with”……
Major D,
How on earth did you know I’ve taken a fancy to finding those? By the way, I really like that one; it has a certain “jen neh say qwah” to it!
A pipe dream is only real if you’re smokin’ the right stuff. Oh, wait, that was long ago.
I completely agree, Domenic Vaiasicca. There wasn’t any real point to that much ballyhooed but essentially downbeat “sale” the Mint tried to convince us was both a big deal and a legitimate bargain since it ended up in fact being hardly any of either.
230th Anniversary Flowing Hair High Relief Gold Coin – 14 November
What are the mintage limits for it and the silver medal? Mintage limits have never been shown on mint site. Also, noticed today that the household limit is now 1. It was 5 until today.
The most interesting thing, to me, on the sales report is over 200 2023 high relief $100 liberty coins sold. Wonder who got those since they were unavailable for months.
They’ll lift the 1 per HH after a week or so depending.
Interesting that the Silver is being introduced a month ahead of the Gold this time around.
Rick the Modus Operandi of the US Mint has often been to
remove the HHL’s after 24 hrs on many/most products. There should be a press release soon, delving into these speculative details IMO?
Well, either the product mintage limit for the “Flowing Hair Silver Medal” will be perhaps 50,000 or the US Mint is anticipating robust initial sales, as to the reasoning of lowering the initial HHL from 5 to 1 recently Chuck? For the 2023 American Liberty Silver Medal, the Mints press release said: “The American Liberty Silver Medal each contains one ounce of 99.9 percent fine silver. The mintage limit is set at 75,000 for each medal, with orders limited to five per household for the first 24 hours of sales.” With the 2023 American Liberty Silver Medal LKS at 34,694… Read more »
CaliSkier,
It would appear that this year’s maximum mintage will be 75,000, the same as it was last year, for the 2024 FH Silver Medal but with the additional twist that 1,794 of this year’s Medals will have a “230” Privy Mark. We’ll soon see how this effects the sales, in other words, will the just promise of the possibility of getting one with the obviously somewhat scarce privy mark enhancement in fact help to both accelerate the sales rate of and increase the sheer number of this year’s Medal’s overall sales.
KCSO, how are you My Friend? Funny, I almost texted you the other day! I’m in for what’s looking like at least one but hopefully two of the Gold Flowing Hair. If the Mint released them today their price is $3620!! That’s a lot of mula! Then the cost of a graded one so it’s North of $4000! That “might”, fingers crossed, be their initial graded PR70! Let’s hope so anyways. Anyways, great to hear from you! We should catch up soon.
Well, as always, Good Luck ALL!!!
I like the 1795 better than the 1794 obverse design. That 1804 shown above is nice.
Good 24k color shark,
I’m not sure about the privy, but I get the reasoning. I’m guessing it’ll be updated with an official Mint rendering soon enough. Or is that it?
I hope she/they shake things up with the Gold and set the mintage at 2300 coins, let’s have some fun and see some heads explode and/or roll !
Rick – The silver will have the privy, so I’m guessing the gold will too.
sharks2th,
Don’t know about that yet for the Gold Coin, but as Rick pointed out there is still plenty of time for that to happen.
You know me, Rick, I will always be less concerned and/or involved with the facts and figures concerning the Gold Coin currently being issued and its eventual fate since 1) I can’t afford the Au versions anyway and 2) it will always bother me that the Silver iteration of such a release is forever restricted to being a medal and not a coin. As we say in German when we want to finalize our point in a conversation, “Und damit basta!”
Kaiser it bothers me too and everyone else I think.
Well, Rick, as I have all too often for my taste had to say regarding situations that somehow get in the way of how smoothly and perfectly we would like our lives to go, gnashing our teeth about that forever and a bunch of Euros will buy us a cup of cafe.
I know they picked the 1794 because of the anniversary year…
Hooahh and hello there, brother from another mother. It’s always exciting to see a new name here, and I hope you decide to hang around, Keep Calm & Stack on!
AKBob,
Don’t choke, and don’t fall for it at the moment. But here they come!
I’m waiting for “our seller” to come up with something from PCGS…
10,000 Mintage looks about right.
I might have to consider buying from the Mint and sending it in for grading……
PS: He looks like the only one with the FH NGC labels–so far that is…
Aren’t these coins going to be an Unc version?(Not proof)……
https://www.ebay.com/itm/166989271006
Well, he had at least 10 separate listings last night for that gold coin and now they’re gone except for one at auction, hmm.
Rick,
Geez Louise, I will NOT pay that, they’re asking $6999.99!! That’s just outrageous! I’ll be sending in mine too if that’s any indication of what these will be for sale for. That’s hwy robbery!! I’m hoping that Seller is an outlier. We still don’t know what the ask price will be from the Mi not, it’s $3620 if it were released today. I’ll keep my hopes up that our Guy comes thru for us. I already purchased the Medal from him on a Pre Sale. That wasn’t cheap either 🙁
Well, as always, Good Luck ALL!!!
AKBob,
I must say this has to be the first time I’ve ever seen you give evidence of such serious sticker shock. Since from observation I believe you to have a pretty thick skin (that’s a compliment, I want you to know for sure) when it comes to gold pricing, your sense of getting thrown for a bit of a loop in this particular instance can only indicate to me that this quoted price must be somewhere out in the stratosphere. The most likely buyer for a coin priced at this level will be someone who possesses rather deep pockets.
Wait a second, Rick; if I understand you correctly ten people have already picked up that Gold Coin at the $7000 asking price or am I mistaken in that belief?
I just looked at his completed/sold items and none are there, so none sold! He took them down/ended (around 10 listings w/dozens of gold FH) for whatever reason, probably being inaccurate? The $7k and $8k were best offer buys. So if I were to offer him $5k he would’ve jumped on it? I was tempted to offer $4200 and he may have jumped on that? But I’m not in the market for an NGC FH at the moment, PCGS is what I’m looking at, and a $500+ premium(above the Mint price)is what I’m guessing that they’ll get for a 70… Read more »
Rick,
This sort of coin purchasing operation, or adventure may be a better term, is apparently not anywhere near as easy, clear cut, or sure-fire a transaction as I previously would have imagined it to be. I can see now thanks to the information you provided that there are a lot of imponderables involved in the process that turn what could otherwise be a simply done situation into a clearly far more complex process. As is so often the case, the devil is in fact in the details.
E 1,
In reply to your #8 above, this item is not any PM, just nickel & iron, but it certainly is unique. I doubt I’ll ever find another. Yes, it IS a meteorite, found by yours truly in 1966 in the area of Bee Cave, TX when I was 7 yrs old. My astrophysicist father told me, “That’s not a piece of slag, that’s a meteorite. Hold onto that!” I have, ever since.
Great discovery Sam! I’ll bet it’s heavy.
It looks like it could have broken off a larger piece on impact?
My rock hunting Grandpa used to make turquoise jewelry and he polished rocks for his hobby in AZ. I was able to grab a couple of small items from his display case after he had passed… My ASE is there for scale..
Rick,
Beautiful pieces you managed to salvage! I assume the smaller, dark point is made of obsidian? And what’s the sample just below the ASE?
I don’t have info on the arrow head, but I do on the sample below the ASE. Unfortunately I’m stuck in Orlando for a while, I’ll need to get back with you on that one, as I don’t remember what it says on the bottom of the tray…
Rick,
I understand being “stuck” in Orlando right now. Western Gulf coast of FL was pretty much shut down. Here in NC, the mountains had serious flooding from Helene. I’m good where I live in the middle of the state. Glad you’re safe, if stuck.
Stuck working, work is good, work = coins!
Rick and Sam-I-am,
Hey you guys, stay dry, stay high (above the water), and stay safe!
Rick and Sam-I-am,
The longer I’m on here and the more comments I read the more I learn not just about the great hobby of coin collecting but also what some of the other things are that make us coin collectors tick. Once more you guys have revealed an aspect of each of your lives that I find fascinating. In the immortal words of R. Crumb, “Keep on truckin’!”
Whoaahhh! Let the frenzy begin!
This changes things up a wee bit..,
Silver medal-
Mintage Limit: 75,000
Product Limit: 75,000
Household Order Limit: 1
Well, she told me “just wait until this fall” last spring at a show…
Now let’s see what’s in store for the Gold?!
Very interesting..,
Yeah, land one of those gold 230 privy’s.., and you can trade it in for a Willy Wonka Everlasting Gobstopper golden ticket, or flip it and check out at Costco for an equivalent dozen gold Buffalos in assay…. Hmmmm,
Keep Calm & Stack On,
Sounds like a good idea, but who knows which coin(s) will go the distance?
Rick, Ventris
Are you saying that The Honorable Ventris Gibson kept her promise to you? Cool!
Yes and with a straight face as she was signing women’s quarters set COA’s…
Unfortunately her and her posse told a bold face lie in my opinion regarding the L&B and the 30 day window. So moving forward, full trust will be sidelined when it comes to the USM.
Keep Calm & Stack On,
Gentlemen, start your engines, the feeding frenzy is about to begin!
