Last week was a bit busier than usual for the United States Mint, with three new product launches, including two holiday ornaments and the Grover Cleveland Presidential Silver Medal. The latest sales data from the U.S. Mint highlights the early performance of these releases.
Released on Oct. 2 and priced at $90, the 1-ounce .999 fine silver medal featuring Grover Cleveland recorded initial sales of 13,784. Its sales already surpass those of any other Presidential silver medal released since 2022, except for the Abraham Lincoln medal, which has reached 19,435. However, a similar trend was observed with the four preceding medals honoring Chester A. Arthur, James A. Garfield, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Ulysses S. Grant, all of which later saw downward sales adjustments. The medal was the Mint’s top weekly seller.
Released Oct. 1 for $35 each and featuring this year’s Kennedy half dollar, the U.S. Mint’s 2024 ornament debuted with sales of 3,344. At the same time, their 2024 Mighty Minters™ Ornament, designed for kids, started with sales of 2,211. These items ranked as the Mint’s third and fourth best weekly sellers. Their opening sales are higher than last year’s holiday ornaments, which featured the year’s Native American dollar and began with sales of 2,905 and 2,046.

“Additionally, 2 products posted negative weekly sales, up from 1 in the previous report. Both showed significant declines, with the 2024-S Proof Morgan Silver Dollar dropping by 20,127 and the 2024-S Proof Peace Silver Dollar falling by 13,391.”
Well Kaiser, there’s that “70ism” you were talking about. Huge -adjustment!
People & resellers getting 70 picky? The Mint has quality issues? Or were they looking for a large/medium “S” Mintmark and failed!?..Thanks for the report Mike. Can you Que up a new article and release it on Mondays? The weekend takes a toll on the comment count in its present format…
Rick,
I admit it would be a feather in my numismatic beret if my “Theory of 70ism” was the explanation for the sizeable drop in 2024 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollar sales. However, I have the distinct feeling the real reason for this week’s big drop in sales is that the interest of collectors and resellers in these modern replicas is fading.
Rick & Kaiser,
Another possibility is simply that the Quality Control at the Mint has gotten so bad that folks are returning even “less-than-70’s”, for obvious, naked-eye defects. I recall how many here returned their clad proof sets this year (a few posts back).
Sam-I-am,
I wasn’t aware it was the case that so many of the 2024 Proof Sets were being returned due to easily spotted defects. I had been under the impression that this was a problem either limited to or most apparent among the 2024 Silver Proof Sets like the two unacceptable ones I myself returned.
Kaiser,
Sorry, you’re correct; I’m the one who made the mistake. I knew that some of the proof sets were returned for quality; my pea-brain confused the two. Human memory is extremely elastic at times!
Kaiser, the legs are shrinking, the novelty of the Porgans is slipping, pinache of Uber digital recreation not big long term. I bought some common date slabbed 65s for not a lot more the. The $100 UsM wants, and the pricing makes returns more viable
John Q. Coinage,
I do believe you’ve checked off all the relevant points in your truly erudite comment. Mint programs that rely too much on past successes, glories and triumphs in the long run inevitably become counter-productive since buyers and sellers in general are inclined to look for fresher ideas and more innovative products to expand their collections and/or inventories.
I think the price point the mint wants for its PM coins is actually decreasing the number of returns for such coins. Why? Because more folks are opting not to buy any in the first pace. I would’ve bought all the Morgan/Peace Dollars this year but for the fact that I’m not a slave to the mints cost demands. Besides, I have a large stash of Ag and Au coins already and with the values for both metals increasing daily, I’m still a happy camper. I’m hearing more people talk about Au hitting $3k/oz. this year. Those ounce Au coins… Read more »
230th Anniversary Flowing Hair High Relief Gold Coin

Household Order Limit: 1
(frowning smirk emoji)
No mention of privy nor COA.., we’ll see..,
Mint and Mint Mark:West Point – None
Privy Mark: None (Total Bummer!)
17,500 is waaaayyyyyy highhhhh…,
Agree the 17.5k seems high. Alienated long term buyers will shy away at the price lo,e 150% of spot. Looking to score like with the Bronco? We’ll see, but historically when I think you have a winner the mint does phuck u over
John Q. Coinage and Keep Calm & Stack On,
Taking a historic coin and putting a current date on it does not an instant classic make. With gold now at an extraordinarily high price and the numismatic attributes of the coin falling short thanks to being a modern clone I’m not sure there is anything left here to warrant a re-sale premium.
Thanks KCSO for the notes on the Flowing Hair Au coin! This coin IMO, should have included the W mint mark at the least. Also, this would have been an occasion for the US Mint to have included a visually pleasing wooden display case along the lines of the “First Spouse” Au coins vs the cheap-o typical clamshell, for an added value, nice classy touch and throw back nod to the historical significance of the modern digital re-make. The US Mint missed another “Golden” opportunity by not also using the year as an additional promo IMO as well. What do… Read more »
It would appear the mint is doing its best to keep both silver and gold replicas as true to the original as possible on the obverse and reverse. I can appreciate that. Regarding the mint mark, if needed, probably best to put it on the gold coin lettered edge. Keep the fields on both obverse and reverse clean. As I mentioned earlier, it’s nice to see a coin without the initials of artists cluttering up the coin. If you need them, make the initials very small and blend into the art.
True, but the replicas are way too sanitary for me. Artificial die cracks or such might be cool. Have not seen any live but suspect they will appear sanitized for your protection. Similar mintage to HR $t. Of 2009, which has a tiny premium v. Spot these daze
I wholeheartedly agree ECG both before and now when you said above you’d: “mentioned earlier, it’s nice to see a coin without the initials of artists cluttering up the coin. If you need them, make the initials very small and blend into the art.”
Agreed. Make ’em special. But I’ve been harping on “nothing special” mint packaging (particularly for precious metal coins) for years to no avail. Yeah, yeah, “cost-saving measures” on packaging containing a $3,000+ coin. That makes sense <eyes roll as I shake my head>.
BTW, for any interested, there are still 22 of the 25 available 2023 Uncirculated Coin Sets, from this a.m.’s morning “Fire Sale”! Good chance there is still additional inventory to be had at the US Mint gift shops in P, D and DC as well?
Mint sets….ok Cali ‘24 he play. Did u hit the Denver shop?
A no go on Denver John Q and I ordered 2, 2024 Uncirculated Sets on subscription to take advantage of free shipping. 2024 D nickel rolls going for $75-85/roll currently. 2024 D nickel in a MS68 would be a money maker for sure! $200+ coin now and more in the future or so it would seem. Looks like the Mint is probably done minting circulating 2024 Nickels? Not rare per say, however a fairly low mintage from a historical standpoint.
CaliSkier,
Many thanks, my friend, for the timely advisory! I had been on the lookout for another one of those from last year to add to my collection and now it’s a done deal!
I will however have to contact the Mint tomorrow to find out why I’m being charged for shipping when I’ve already made my order quota for free shipping for this year. By the way, is there anyone else here who has encountered this problem also?
You’re welcome Kaiser and make sure to get the US Mint to issue a refund of your shipping charges for sure! Hope you receive a quality or at least decent set! Everything in life is so expensive and grocery prices seem to still be increasing, so every little bit helps or hurts. No reason to throw it away on bogus USM shipping charges IMO.
CaliSkier, Thanks for the good wishes; much appreciated as always! Oh, as it turned out the Mint shipping charge wasn’t unwarranted. When I had thought I was going to be done with the Mint forever I had made what now turns out to be a mistake by turning off all subsequent communications from same. Unfortunately, simply making three purchases in one year isn’t the only proviso one has to follow for getting free shipping; one must also be a willing receiver of Mint messages. Luckily, the Mint customer service person was very nice and gave me a one-time courtesy refund… Read more »
Rick, All, Well talk about letting the air out of my ballon!! I can’t tell you just how disappointed (miffed, peod, etc.) that I am with the very high mintage of the Gold Flowing Hair!!! There will be NO upside to this coin. On top of the high mintage, there’s no Privy or signed COA’s!! I’m absolutely SHOCKED the US Mint would give a Medal a Privy AND signed COA’s and zip, ziltz, nada for the Coin!!! The mintage should have been 10K, 12.5K at most! This high mintage could make this coin available for more than just this year,… Read more »
For the amount of money that is required to get the flowing hair gold, there are a lot of nice pre-1933 gold coins out there.
Better date 65 St. G…….. 20th Cent slabbed 67 21/2$ for less. CC $20 Libs can be had for about $4,000+/-
I’ve stuck with pre ‘33 since I fired the mint back I. 2020….i was contemplating the FH, even at 3,700$ and a cardboard holder. No way with the jack up of mintages. Medal do people care about Medals to pay say 10x spot…l.mint already @3x. Glorified Ag round….
Good point on the medal pricing. I am in for one silver medal as I’ll never get close enough to a real 1794 dollar and hold one. Did the same for the 2021 Porgans. A little sterile for me, but that’s the way it goes.
AKBob, The Mint wants to sell as many gold coins as they can since the profit margin on their gold products is so very high; therefore, it is in the Mint’s interest to sell more rather than fewer gold coins, hence the higher mintage. Medals, on the other hand, because they are I would think a much harder sell, require more incentive to get them moved out the door. This is likely why the medals were given the [possible] perk of both the privy mark and the signed COA. Of course this is all none other than my best guess,… Read more »
LOOKS like the big boys went through their purchases. Got the 70s and kicked back all their losers, for the casual buyer to get…. I thought HA na, the USM tightened return standards, or were there a lot of crappy coins??? Ventris??? You got some splaining to do Missy….
John Q. Coinage,
I’m happy now that I bailed out of that particular Mint program after the first year. I was willing to spend the money for the initial offering of these replicas as nice looking historical souvenirs but beyond that it became redundant. Enough is sometimes enough.
John Q. Coinage,
The Mint may have tightened its return policy for the little guy, meaning the likes of us, but I can’t imagine they would also apply the stricter standards to the Big Guys.
Well with the news that Disneyland is increasing prices…. looks like i will be done with the mint after the release of this years reverse morgan and proofs and officially stop all my subscriptions. It was a nice 45 year run for me. but when a day at Disneyland equals 1 silver dollar…its time to move on from something….Disneyland wins even at my age of 62.
Domenic Vaiasicca,
While I can’t disgree that the Mint’s products are now egregiously overpriced, I also believe that Disneyland/World’s admission fees have risen to beyond outragious. To my way of thinking you’re shelling out all that money for the privilege of standing in line with a bunch of sweaty folks and whiny kids for the rather dubious pleasure of eventually going on a bunch of tired old rides.
Quick question Kaiser. I haven’t been to either location in nearly 20 years myself. How about you?
I used to go to Disneyland 3 times a year but it,like everything else, has had prices raised absurdly.
Kaiser,
With Disney’s stock price and park attendance in free fall, I can’t think of anything better to do than raise the price of admission to their parks. I’m always amused listening to any MVP of a championship team stating he/she is going to Disneyland. Pretty soon they will be the only ones who can afford going there.
