Late Thursday, the United States Mint released sales figures for its numismatic products through the week ending Nov. 3, marking the first results for the new Zitkala-Ša quarter.
Released on Oct. 28, the Zitkala-Ša quarter represents the fifteenth installment in the U.S. Mint’s four-year coin series commemorating the achievements of American women and is the fifth and final quarter issued this year. Combined rolls and bags of the quarter sold in the initial days totaled 1,670,720 coins.
For comparison, the first four quarters of this year, honoring Celia Cruz, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Patsy Takemoto Mink, and Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, recorded initial sales of 1,925,500; 1,887,760; 1,919,240; and 2,010,460 quarters, respectively.
All these figures represent a slower start than any of the five quarters released in 2023, with their sales debuts ranging from 2,141,420 coins for the 2023 Maria Tallchief quarter to 2,745,380 coins for the 2023 Bessie Coleman quarter.

Prominently, prevailing precious metal price plunge presently persists.
The 2024 Flowing Hair Silver Medal is proving its metal. Latest Mint Sales report (Nov. 3) shows the “wave of returns” has not materialized as yet, and the dealer prices are double (approx. $225 in OGP) the Mint’s original $104 price (if you can still find them for sale).
Rich,
It is becoming ever clearer to me that my original call on this silver medal was woefully in error. My handy consolation in regard to not picking one of these up when it was still possible is that I fully realize that among the countless mistakes I have made in my life this relatively minor one doesn’t rank anywhere even close to being truly significant in terms of consequence.
By the way, I am very happy for and wish to congratulate everyone who was smart enough to get one of these when they could. Long live coin collecting!
Kaiser remember Ventris has half…HALF the mintage in stasis or under a mattress… give it time. There are some decent flowing hair Ag rounds for like <$40
John Q. Coinage,
Do you think she might actually be toying with us? Perhaps the plan is to hold on to the other half of the coins until this initial run, i.e. this first part of the release has exhausted all the possibilities that were inherent in its low production count advantage as far as enhanced pricing levels go. Subsequently she could release the second half of the FHS coins in an attempt to soak up whatever loose cash is left from those poor souls suffering from residual (or secondary) FOMO.
Kaiser, I think you are spot on in your Post. I think the Mints going in the “wait and see” mode. Why produce more if there’s a lot of Returns? If they do produce the rest, you’ll see the price/value drop like a “Ton of Bricks”! No matter what, this Medal is spectacular, even as a Medal! I love mine and I’ll keep them (2)!! I was originally going to sell the one I have in OGP. I only purchased it as a lottery ticket for the 230 Privy. I lost, as usual, lol! I’ve never been a good gambler!… Read more »
AKBob,
Well, I see I’m not alone in thinking this might be a rather shrewd ploy by Ms. Ventris to keep the value of the FHS sky high while she takes her time deciding when or perhaps even if she will have the latter half of those Silver Medals produced to bring the total minted up to the originally published number. Time will tell!
Keep an eye out for the mintage numbers of this quarter – she may be the lowest of the entire series…. We shall see!
Tony@GA,
Many thanks for the advisory, my friend! The Kaiser Eye will enhance its vigilance.
Tony@GA,
It would be something if privy marks began appearing on AWQs. But only 100 per coin!
Lest anyone pop a cork at the very thought of this actually coming to pass, trust me, I was just floating a monumentally unlikely possibility for the sheer fun of it.
So funny, these AWQs do NOT circulate never get them in the issue year. The mint make 100s o millions..where are they…? Personally, Imreally don’t care as banks treat u like a Houti when u ask for new rolls….
AI spellcheck on houti unreal
I got a roll of quarters today and one of the 2024s was on the top. I have three 2024 AWQs now. No Celia Cruz, Hope or this latest one yet. At least I’m finding one in my rolls. Have plenty of 2022 and 2023 ($2 worth) in my latest roll of quarters. Since I bought a silver proof AWQ set, regular proof and mint sets, I have them all for this year’s issue, except for a circulation S. Same with my George Bush dollars, only P and D, no S. We’ll see what 2025 brings us. Do you think… Read more »
Antonio,
It’s really difficult to make a call on whether or not the current Mint Director’s job is secure under the new administration. I suppose it depends on how much what she does matters to the new big cheeses and if Ms. Ventris has any contacts in or connections with the incoming executive branch members. We’ll soon see.
So far only Trump loyalists are being put forward. I wouldn’t doubt she’ll be replaced by a loyalist. That could work for us. Time will tell. I found another 2024 quarter, on the floor of my laundromat. It’s a Patsy Mink AWQ. My second one. Also now have two Dr. Mary Walker AWQ as well.
Antonio,
The idea of a new Mint Director being appointed for some reason reminds me of the old “The King is dead; long live the King” saying.
John Q. Coinage,
I can relate to that for sure. The last time – and that does mean the final time – I dared to ask for rolls at my bank they looked at me as if my saucer just had to be hovering outside the window and I simply came in to make contact with the earthlings.
John Q. Coinage,
“Threat you like a Houthi.” I love it!
Sam-I-am in the previous thread, said: “Cali, below, may be underestimating those, too.”, in response to me saying: “I have a hard time believing or thinking that $50K+ will be the low end of the range, with all available selling for that or more?” Well, here’s another way to perhaps contemplate these upcoming 2024 Flowing Hair 1oz Au $1’s? These are modern day remakes and many serious collectors, I’d imagine really don’t care for or about modern coinage. Especially, not manufactured “Faux Rarities”? If I had the means and were a “serious” collector of high value or high dollar coins,… Read more »
CaliSkier,
Great comment and some interesting articles at the far end of the link. Thanks for that!
Cali, I can’t say that I disagree with your thinking regarding “artificial rarities”, but I’ll stand by my opinion (just like anatomical orifices, everyone has one) regarding the upcoming auction. I think FOMO and people with too much money/too little sense will drive prices stupidly high. I actually hope you’re right; If so, I’ll publicly apologize! I’d hope that there are more serious collectors than opportunists in the auction, but I don’t have a very high opinion of the public IQ. If I expect people to act like morons, I’m not as disappointed when they do. Just try driving in… Read more »
Sam-I-am and CaliSkier,
Not that I can even dream about affording any of the seemingly growing number of the Mint’s recently generated onslaught of artificial scarcities, but in the bigger picture I might think that this type of pre-programmed FOMO just can’t help but in some way be held partially responsible for causing the dilution of the original meaning of numismatic scarcities and by extension even rarities per se.
CaliSkier, I’m in your camp regarding all the hype and blatant fervour being expressed over this ‘modern era’ coin. The 1st FH with the die will probably go for an insane price, but the rest of the 229 might become available at a reasonable price point. I have no idea what that price point will be, but since I’m not a female, I’m not going to advance hysterical estimates….a sexist would say! I’m going to see what information comes from the mint and when the auction begins, if prices do go hyperbolic, I’ll just sit back and be amazed. As… Read more »
Craig,
Mintspeak is the latest 1984ish-style language. In this case “discover”=”invent”.
“As I’ve said before, I expect many more of these auctions from the mint as they ‘discover’ more and more rarities which folks simply must have in their collections.”
And THAT, sir, is where my trepidation lies. Do I really want to get on the ground floor with this madness and encourage its continuance? There’s likely to be much soul-searching between now and December.
Well,
If there’s anyone who can negotiate through the negativity and nonsensical bashing coming from 70% who post comments here regarding the USM and it’s products, it is you REB. E1 is another, not one complaint(others as well)…
I don’t see any madness, nor fear an acceleration or ‘discovery’ of more coins like these anytime soon, maybe I’m wrong and Superman will be a Smash!?. The last attention getter was the v75 privy 4 years ago. This FHG privy takes things a step further imo.
I’m pulling for you if you go for one, you won’t regret it…
Good luck!!
If it were once every four years, I’d likely be in each time. But I wonder if in two years (or sooner) we’ll be discussing the Semiquincentennial gold proof coins with 250 special privy marked specimens.
If I get one of the 229, I’ll be sure to let the CoinNews comment cadre know so that I may receive requisite praise or scorn. Thanks for the well wishes. I suspect I’ll need them.
REB,
This brings up an interesting and curious point. Is it possible that in spite of all the regular and/or frequent protestations to the contrary and for whatever inexplicable reason collectors and/or flippers are increasingly finding themselves powerfully attracted to the Mint’s modern “rarities”?
Disturbing but true.
I’m almost embarrassed to post my very minor good fortune given all the Flowing Hair mania, but here goes anyway –
We took a Bahamas cruise last week and when I cashed my slot voucher the cashier handed me the paper money and then slapped a shiny 1955 quarter on the pad for my change! Looks like it came straight out of the OGP.
Then on the way home, a stop at Dunkin’ Donuts yielded a “scarce” 2024 nickel.
I know, it doesn’t take much to get us SWFL seniors excited 🙂
It’s called “affordable coin collecting”!
Congratulations!
I like hearing about pocket change finds, so thanks for that!
PS: It was 15° last week in CO(home), but 85° last week in FL(work)… Nice!
I like it down here, everyone gets along.
Love it Dave! That’s what it is all about – the hunt and the prize!!
DaveSWFL,
The best kind!
Congratulations, Dave; a very lucky “twofer” if there ever was one!
DaveSWFL I’m glad you weren’t embarrassed to share your minor good fortune! Those are some awesome finds! I know some have scoffed at the 2024 Nickels, however the D minted issues are still fetching $80+ per roll and roughly $5 per nickel, which works out to &200/roll. Not a bad ROI(40X-100X) if one can or is able to score a box with 50 rolls. Yes it takes time, shipping, transportation to unload and it’s small potatoes for many, however with an initial outlay of $100, one could potentially turn that into a $4,000-$10,000. BTW, the P minted roles are selling… Read more »
CaliSkier,
Now that you’ve brought up the financial prospects aka profit potential of the 2024 Clad Nickel I have to mention that of late I’ve been given to wondering at length if the Honorable Ms. Gibson has in fact thanks to some especially brilliant planning hit upon an admittedly not all that stealthful but nevertheless clearly effective and relentlessly successful manner to yank our collective FOMO prospective future value chains in a way not seen before in US Mint history.
I hear that there’s going to be another ASE with a “Flag” Privy coming out in 2025!! Like CAG used to say, “more and more gimmicks, lower and lower mintages and higher and higher prices”!! I have to think to myself, he’s right again!!! Ya can’t say we weren’t Warned!! Just as a reminder to ALL here in regards to how much do we “think” the first FHG w/die coin will go for at Auction, well, how many here remember how much the very first 2014 Gold Kennedy, w/mintage of 75K, sold for at the Coin Show in Chicago, plus… Read more »
AKBob,
This repetition of creating artificial scarcities for the apparently sole purpose of profit mongering reminds me Sonny and Cher’s big hit “The Beat Goes On”. Does it ever!
Speaking of CAGCRISP, has anybody heard anything from him. I saw he was member on Collectors Universe. The last post I can find was in December of 2023. Collectors Universe shows his last activity being in April of 2024.
I’m going All In on this FHG!! If it’s a “fail” it’s a fail. Either way, I’ll be happy having this coin in my collection and possession. I’d much rather prefer an instant Sell Out, obviously for two main reasons, if it Sells Out first day, it’ll have instant Legs! Secondly, I’ll have four of them and I will Flip 2 to help make up the premiums I had to pay the Mint & the Dealer I purchased two from graded in PR70. I’ll also have two, still sealed/unopened from the Mint. Which one(s) will I sell? It won’t be… Read more »
Just one for me, thank you.
AK,
I’m in for two. One of them is the pre-sale 70 flag label from our buddy in FL.
The other will be Mint direct. There should be plenty to go around I would think…
Good luck!
AKBob,
I wish I could entertain the concept of buying even one of these (w/o privy), but my budget forces me to live a less active life in the gold lane! As I commented earlier, I’ll just have to sit on the sidelines and watch. Good luck, and I hope you get all of your intended purchases! Keep us informed – at least I can participate vicariously through folks like you!
Sam-I-am,
I can’t possibly say it any better so I will be content to ditto all that you said above!
Sam-I-Am, Thank you very much! I wish You could get one too!! I truly mean that too! I was in your spot for many decades. I actually never thot I’d be able to ever purchase a 1 oz Gold Coin! I remember shaking just ordering my very first 1/10th oz gold coin! It was exciting and nerve racking all at the same time. I couldn’t really afford a 1/10th oz but I did it anyways. Then I kept purchasing one here and one there and it really added up over the years. I was purchasing Silver, even rolls here and… Read more »
