FHS Medals -83 pcs …
Pants on Fire!
I thought the FH medal was a nice looking piece of Ag, but since it was a ‘medal’, not a coin and obviously over-priced (I’m being kind here), I have absolutely no need for it.
Presale FHG 69’s going for $4,200 flag label. 70’s going for $4,850.
The pricing on the flag label for 69’s which is the same as OGP normally, or 70’s isn’t that much higher than projected issue price. I am thinking dealer buy back will be spot unfortunately. I hope this coin has legs and goes up.
East Coast Guru,
It just struck me that while there are so many ongoing complaints here about the Mint’s high list prices for precious metal products, for some reason those objections appear to fall by the wayside when it comes to having to pay many multiples of the Mint’s asking price when making purchases of these same items on the secondary market.
I’ve been wondering about that for awhile Kaiser. I’ve been in the stock market for decades, and most of my holdings have done well with time, some really well, but if you buy a coin that doesn’t double or triple instantly, there seems to be a sense you’ve bought a lemon! To me it seems people are inserting coins as the new beanie babies. I’m just as happy to see a coins value gradually increase with ‘the passage of time’. Who knows, maybe the Health Department will declare FOMO as a disease!
Craig – did you just say “in the passage of time”?
Sorry…., I couldn’t resist
Tony,
I couldn’t help myself! Lol
Craig, Exactly so. It’s as if instant gratification has replaced the traditional system of waiting patiently for a coin or coins to increase its/their value over a period of years rather than insist on seeing it double or in fact multiplied many times in value within a few days or even hours after its release. Not very many people appear to be willing to wait for their newly acquired numismatic treasures to make a gradual climb up the price charts; it seems it’s as though it has to happen now. Incidentally, if gambling is considered to be a disease, it… Read more »
“I thought the FH medal was a nice looking piece of Ag”. It’s done better than any of the Presidential silver medals. They’re expensive pieces of Ag at that.
They are expensive only to those that want or desire them. Since I don’t, I could care less. If these Ag FH medals were priced at a respectable price point, like $59 0r $61, I might buy one, as it is a classic looking piece. It just isn’t a coin.
Craig,
I’m not really sure if I’m making a valid comparison here, but to me this smacks of how a bucket of paint splattered on a canvas by a nobody is worth nothing yet if the same exact thing is done by a very famous artist that finished work will sell for tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. It’s not always a matter of what something is intrinsically or artistically worth but rather a case of how much money people are willing to part with to have the item in their possession.
Kaiser, Jackson Pollock’s ‘Free Form’ or a struggling artists rendition…hum? I think you’re right, as I’d go with the former (although I wouldn’t be able to afford the millions it would fetch). I am amazed at what people are willing to part with for a piece of shiny metal which the mint has decided to add a small privy to. The company you’re a fan of, Pinehurst Coins, offers a privy marked Ag FH medal on eBay for around $4k! For a medal. Now the question I have for you is, ‘After you rush over to eBay to procure that… Read more »
Craig,
That’s been my own feeling since the beginning; medals can’t match up to coins.
Kaiser,
I’ll just say I’ve never bought a medal in my lifetime and I don’t intend to start now. Lol.
Same.
REB, We might just be priced out of those privy Au FH’s. I looked on eBay for prices for the FH medal with privy and saw prices in the thousands for them. Hell, there was one that was asking $29k for one with the autographed COA! ‘If’ people are buying these, then how nuts will they go for a Au coin version? $100k or more at the auction? The privy marked coins are interesting to me, but I’m wondering why those Canadian Ag dollars coins with privy marks garner very little interest. Is there a disease going around that only… Read more »
“Is there a disease going around that only affects American coin collectors?”
Coin collectors/investors/flippers/traders are not different than many other Americans. They love to brag about how great their vehicles, houses, bank accounts, brokerage accounts, wives, girlfriends, dicks, and almost anything else in their lives are. Coins are not immune. In this instance with the FHG, the blank of the new golden rule, “I’m better than you because [blank]”, is filled in with “I have the rare, new shiny coin and you don’t”.
Rick,
It appears the dam has finally burst in regard to the return to the Mint of some of the FH Silver Medals, or at the very least it has sprung a leak. Now what remains to be determined is (a) whether or not this trend continues and (b) if these returns are from Big Guys returning below 70 grade medals or just little people with buyer’s remorse.
By the way, 385 of the three-roll Zitkala-Sa AWQs were also returned to the Mint; I wonder what’s up with that?
I’ll finish my comment above regarding the 83 FHS medal returns on the report… (Liar Liar)Pants on Fire..
If a bulk order of three roll sets is cancelled or returned unopened by a big boy or two, 385 is not surprising. Remember the recent Prez/Armed Services medal returns…
First it was platinum, but now it’s gold that is taking a licken’; will it keep on ticken’?
Interesting that the Mint just changed the 2024 Flowing Hair Silver Medal item product to 50,000 (original product limit was 75,000), as first reported by KC&SO, closely matching last week’s reported sales of 49,996.
This is completely fucked, sorry Whitman…the Mint lost me before this is like being tortured. WTF Credibility is non existent. Ventris really scam mistress…. AND I TRIED THE NEW WEBSITE, Mi t to say it sux is a compliment. It takes you where IT want to go, I open the page, Ag rip off set, X out, open new window Tubman pushed like crack, huh. Finding something this a joke FHG, didn’t load, Lookong forward to saving $3,640 as likely a shut out for me. The medal #s should really be investigated. 18.5k FHG naaah let’s make 30,000 it can… Read more »
John Q. Coinage,
Well, this is different. Usually you tell us how you really feel. 😉
Rich,
I’m going all in with my own fresh conspiracy story here. The Mint was clearly waiting until the first batch of FH Silver Medals went into the return bin; that was the trigger for shutting down any further production of this product. Now the Mint and everyone who purchased this Medal can claim it sold out and whatever legs it may have grown up until now will be somewhat stabilized. Ms. Ventris is shrewd indeed.
Dead on the mark, Sir Kaiser. As Antonio nailed it 10 hours ago with his humble opinion, “I wouldn’t be surprised if 49,996 is it and we can hold our breaths for years and no more medals will be offered.”
2024 gold proof sales are struggling. Greatest Generation 3-coin set (4,431), Harriet Tubman 3-coin set (4,186), Liberty & Britannia (5,549), American Eagles 4-coin set (4.592), American Buffalo (8,218) are all lower versus comparable past sets and singles. Unless I’m missing something, I don’t think AKBob is going to have to worry about nabbing his allotment of FHGs out of over 17,000 available.
REB,
With a price point of $3640, I would be totally amazed if AKBob can’t secure one. Maybe the smart money doesn’t like forking over $1050 to Gibson to procure one? Just a thought.
I may just pass on FHG, as anytime, or most x I think I got a good mint purchase they, he USM somehow screws u…..and with Trumpy gold May hit a speed bump and fall back to $2k, as Crypto is the new kid in town
John, the new estimated price point for Bitcoin is now $200K by next year!
Wow, that’s crazy. Maybe I’m just that one remaining old guy shouting at the kids to get off my lawn. They just laugh and say, “Look at that relic. I bet he wastes his money on collecting coins”.
Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think anyone would laugh at the value of your Au Proof collection. Best that no one in your neighbourhood knows what you enjoy collecting!
Mum’s the word.
REB,
Due to less than ideal economic condtions money in our country is already dear enough as it is. To be asked to pay such rather exorbitent sums for something that whatever else it might be is not exactly essential to one’s life might just be a step too far.
Agreed.
Kaiser,
But you’re still going to buy that Ag FH medal with privy for $4.1k from Pinehurst, right?
Craig,
Unless it comes in a Red Oak Box I’m not the slightest bit interested.
Ah, but the FHG sold out in less than 4 minutes. Already being sold on eBay for twice the amount paid for it from the Mint. Someone has money, if not the majority of us.
REB, my best guess scenario for tomorrow is that the first day sales of the FHG coins will mirror the sales of the FHS medals. With the HOL of 1, they should remain available for sale until the HOL is lifted after 24 hours, and then sell out shortly thereafter.
Precious metals are still on a slide. As usual, good for buyers but not so much for sellers.
