Proof sets and proof coins drew the most attention during the week ending Dec. 22, according to the latest U.S. Mint sales stats; granted, such products are always popular with collectors.
Among them, the 2024 Proof Set recorded the highest weekly gains, followed by the 2024 Mint Set, which was one of only two non-proof products among the week’s 10 best sellers. The other was the reverse proof set of 2024 Morgan and Peace dollars.

- 2024-W Proof Silver Eagle (+954 to 282,305)
- 2024-S Proof Morgan Silver Dollar (+409 to 169,212)
- 2024 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set (+345 to 21,370)
- 2024-S Proof Peace Silver Dollar (+340 to 153,255)
- 2024 American Women Quarters Proof Set (+254 to 47,840)
In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 503 numismatic products. The data revealed that 64 products outperformed their sales from the previous week, compared to 74 in the prior report. Five products experienced a week-over-week increase of more than 1,000 units, compared to 4 previously.
Additionally, two products posted negative weekly sales, the same as in the previous report. The reductions were modest.

Except for the Cruz quarters looks like the 2024 3 roll set (with the S quarter) will probably sell less than the 2023 3 roll set. Not sure when they stop selling them, probably once the first new one is released then the first of 2024 will be discontinued. guess the interest is waning…
I think you’re right about waning interest. Plus, it didn’t help that the mintage was increased. The Mint will keep selling them until they’re gone, whatever year that will be.
If everyone is feeling bored over the holidays, you can always try to build the finest Lincoln Memorial Set possible. It might cost you about $500 with the album and the slip case. It will take some time to complete though. But at least you will get a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. Something you don’t get drinking the mint kool-aid year after year after year.

Again, being copious and complete is important when building albums. Cotton gloves and a mask all the way. Don’t buy someone else’s work online either. Build your own. There’s a big difference. Someday, when I’m dead and gone, someone will unearth these and have them all certified on their dime per my instructions. At least I got to be the family’s numismatic historian for a time and the tradition continues.

E 1, thanks for sharing. I’m curious if you’ve seen any 1c albums that differentiate between the 2009 P&D satin finish 95% copper (from the uncirculated sets) and the regular zinc varieties? Some collectors probably don’t know that the 2005 to 2010 uncirculated/mint sets all have satin finish. I’m surprised they’re not often recognized as different varieties by more reference sources. But the 2009 are on a different level IMO being 95% copper.
Major D, I have not seen any Dansco Lincoln Memorial Cent albums that include the 2009 SMS coins, the 1981-S proof, and the 1995 Double Die. I slabbed those. The album I used for the Lincoln Memorial set shown was the Dansco 8102. This album has been updated since I purchased three of them back in 2021. Do you do any form of cleaning, like a gentle wipe with denatured alcohol or distilled water with your pennies?
So, many many decades ago, E1, I picked out the shiniest copper pennies that I could find out of circulation and promptly used my thumbs to press them into Whitman albums. Naturally they aren’t as bright and shinny as they once were. What should I have done (not that I can go back over half a century) and what should I do now? There is nothing rare there, just pennies that aren’t as bright as they once were, as is your wonderful collection.
Kia99, Just curious, are we talking Wheat Cents or Memorial Cents? I would also recommend white cotton gloves and a mask when assembling your sets into an album at a clean table. Regarding albums, any brand of album is fine providing it is the type with the sliding plastic lenses that covers the obverse and reverse of the coins. Finally, fingerprints cause irreparable damage to copper cents and finger prints can not be dipped out. I’m curious. How do other metals react to being handled? Better or worse than copper? A comment a while back mentioned that some grading service inspections were performed without gloves and masks. Would you consider that to be an unpardonable sin?
REB, it’s my understanding that none of the grading services use gloves while handling coins for grading! I doubt they’re wearing a mask either. I think what E 1 does is the correct way, wear a mask and gloves. I’m not sure why gloves aren’t used by the grading companies but in my opinion, they should.
I’m curious about why masks are in the conversation. I’m not an especially savvy collector, just a casual one. Is a mask recommended so as to not put humidity or germs onto the face of the coins, or is it to prevent yourself getting germs FROM the coins? I recently searched 40 quarter rolls for silver and I caught a cold just after doing it. I wonder if I caught the cold from the germs all over the coins? Thoughts? Thanks.

REB, Taking lessons from the semiconductor industry, it is just MHO that the TPGs should use latex finger cots when handling all coins. They should also employ spittle guards or masks to prevent black carbon spittle spots from showing up on the coins years later. Additionally, hard acetate flips should be used when submitting coins to the TPGs. If I had it my way, environmental conditions at the TPGs would resemble a casual Level 10,000 cleanroom. Kia99, I would just leave it be. However, those board style albums are not the best method for storing copper coins for the long haul. I prefer any album that employs the dual plastic lenses on both sides of the coin. I also run some archival scotch tape down along the sides of the pages to seal the pages off from environmental gases. Also, the corrosion inhibiting slip covers appear to have been very effective on my copper coins. Finally, the storage location is equally important. Kia99, I’ve given more thought to your inquiry. If you are feeling energetic and experimental…..this will take some time and money though. You can try your luck dipping those Lincoln Cents. I would use a Q-Tip to agitate those fingerprints. You will have to develop your own technique. Always rinse with Distilled Water several times after the chemical dip. I would recommend high quality compressed air and a good set of tongs. Roll the coins on the edges in a high-grade absorbent table napkin and GENTLEY blow them off with air. Yes, practice first. Remember, some chemical dips are fast and some are slow. Sometimes a degreaser might be necessary before the chemical dip to remove the fingerprints first. For the coins that don’t conserve, try buying new ones. But, most of your coins look pretty good. Think of it as a restoration project. A Dansco 7100 would be perfect for what you are trying to do.
