In January, demand for Australian bullion contracted, according to data from The Perth Mint of Australia, with silver product sales hitting a 67-month low, while gold product sales fell to a 10-month low.
The Mint’s performance came amid rallying precious metal prices. In January, LBMA prices (USD) climbed 7.8% for gold and 9.3% for silver.
Neil Vance, General Manager of Minted Products at the Perth Mint, noted that the ongoing high prices of gold and silver have continued to suppress demand for precious metal minted products.
"Customers are more likely to be selling to take advantage of the current high returns at this point of the cycle," Vance commented.
"We continue to work hard to develop high quality and innovative numismatic and bullion products, such as our Australian Lunar Year of the Snake range, to meet the expectations of all our customers."
Perth Mint Bullion Sales in January 2025
The Perth Mint reported gold coin and bar sales of 18,548 ounces in January, the lowest monthly total since March 2024, when sales reached 16,442 ounces. The figure represents a decline of 41.5% from December and 24.8% from January 2024.
Silver coin and bar sales for the month totaled 414,975 ounces, the lowest since June 2019, when they stood at 344,474 ounces. Sales dropped 60.8% from December and 46.1% from January 2024.
