To mark 25 years since the Sacagawea dollar’s release, the United States Mint may issue a 24K gold coin in 2025 featuring its original design. The U.S. Mint presented the possibility today to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) for feedback.

The $1 coin, often called the Sacagawea "golden dollar" due to its composition that gives it a distinctive gold color, entered circulation in 2000 as part of an effort to establish a widely used dollar coin. That effort continued until 2002, when production was scaled back, and the coins were struck exclusively for collectors. In 2009, the Mint introduced its Native American $1 Coin Program, which features the same Sacagawea obverse design but annually changing reverse designs.
As proposed, the 2025 Sacagawea 25th Anniversary Gold Coin would be struck in a half-ounce of gold, with a diameter just 20 thousandths of an inch larger than the original dollar.
The obverse design features Sacagawea in a three-quarter profile with her infant son, Jean Baptiste, on her back. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2025." As U.S. Mint gold coins are produced at its West Point facility, the anniversary dollar would carry a "W" mint mark.
The reverse depicts a soaring eagle encircled by 17 stars, representing the number of states in the Union during the 1804 Lewis and Clark expedition. Its tail feathers match those of the coins released into circulation in 2000, rather than the more highly detailed diagonal tail feathers seen on the much scarcer promotional 2000 Sacagawea "Cheerios" dollars. Inscriptions read "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "ONE DOLLAR."
The anniversary edition, as proposed, omits the half-ounce weight and .9999 fineness inscriptions. From a technical standpoint, these details could be added to the coin’s surface or edge. CCAC members expressed mixed opinions on whether to include them. Ultimately, the committee approved a motion recommending both designs as presented.
Other details, such as whether the coin will be issued in an uncirculated or proof finish, remain undecided or unannounced.
From previous thread: E 1 said “Rich, If it does happen, then I would be curious about the effect it would have on inflation and the stock market. I understand there are a number of complexities to consider here. Knowing these answers would certainly provide some much needed forward looking guidance to help with my just in case what-if scenario. Thanks Cag,
Very informative and helpful. Yes, you do have your many merits. You answered all my questions. Nice piece of useful information here. You’re Golden.
Thanks again
LOL. Especially the “monolithic columns of uninviting gray mass.”
FYI major d, let me help you out to fill in the large blank spot in your head when it comes to that quote you posted up above. Since you rarely have context or standing when you fabricate your petty insults toward E1, allow me to dismantle this dig-centric post of yours, eh? On another blog, cagcrisp used to occasionally post all of the new, pertinent, up-to-date cumulative sales data lists from the Mint. Also some charts, and an occasional article from the leading Financial websites. When the Mint blog-hosts had failed to report those lists in a timely matter(or… Read more »
As I said in my comment to CaliSkier 5 hours ago: I am done with this for now. Call it a cease-fire or detente. But I’m not against returning shots back across the DMZ. So, do you want to tone it down or continue anew?
Your cease-fire is well taken. It’s too bad that you didn’t listen to REB a day or two ago to de-escalate and let it go. On the same note, it’s too bad that E1 did not listen to me to de-escalate and let it go either. A day late and a dollar short I guess. So here we are. No need to reply either, I’ll conclude my point next. I’ve already toned it down weeks ago after Kaiser. I don’t care to litigate as to why the tone had increased over the last few days, or even entertain your perceived… Read more »

Thank you for providing additional information and insights on the possible U.S. gold reevaluation, Gold Revaluation Account and Sovereign Wealth Fund, and for the explanation of your March GLD sale.

Major Poser,

How is that board position even possible? The best I’ve ever accomplished is double check & mate. I’m not even sure triple check is doable.
Behavior is the language of trauma. Alright, I am done with this for now CaliSkier. But remember it is not right to lump the aggressor and defender in the same category, just like it is not right to equate Russia and Ukraine, or Japan and the US in WWII.
Recall your own experience in late 2023-early 2024 with Dazed and Coinfused. I left first, then Kaiser followed several months later. Perhaps this will refresh your memory:

I need a chess set like that one! I’m still waiting for the Mint to issue a proof set with one-ounce gold and platinum coin pieces – 16 of each color with a board crafted from rich dark walnut with fine white and black marble inlay.
What d’ya say, Cali? How much would that set me back?
REB, a chess set as you describe would be cool to have. It sounds right up the alley for RCM. But perhaps with black rhodium pieces?
Well Reb, that would be quite an impressive chess set to say the least! If we use a U.S: Mint PF 1oz AGE base price of $3,800/Au coin and $1,545/Pt coin, the 32 pieces/coins alone would set you back, $85,520! Major D, Hello and good tidings, my friend! Much to my surprise it appears that after all this time of debating precisely such a development, the American “penny” might indeed not be long for this world. Also, I recently read an opinion of someone at the Boston branch of Stacks Bowers that while this news, if in fact true, obviously signals the end of the line for this particular denomination of currency, rather ironically there is a good chance that at least in the short term the cent might well experience enhanced collector attention due to the numismatic ramifications of… Read more »
Let me be the first to welcome you back Kaiser.
Nice shades.
It is delightful to receive such a warm greeting, Rick, and thank you also for the observation regarding my sunglasses. Here’s the kicker; those were actually added via digital magic to my original photo by my always quick to be funny son who thought the composite helped emphasize my likeness to a certain sportscaster he is familiar with. Sir Kaiser, how wonderful it is to hear from you again; I am so glad you are back with us! When the news about discontinuing the “Penny” first came out I immediately thought of you, as it was passionate topic of yours. Best wishes and warmest regards…

Thank you so much, Reb, for your welcome back greeting; I most certainly do appreciate it. It’s a great feeling to know that I was missed as much as I missed you and my other good friends here during my absence. Collecting coins is indeed a pleasure, but it is the people we share this hobby with that bring true joy to the experience!
Many thanks to you, Sir Rich old buddy, for the magnificently effusive greeting, and I’m sure I don’t even have to tell you the feeling most definitely goes both ways, and in spades! And you most certainly did hit the proverbial nail on the head regarding the effect on me of the news of the Cent’s aka “Penny’s” possibly imminent devise; in fact, it was precisely that topic/issue/event that ignited the fire under me to make me want to make my return to this wonderous domain of fellow coin fanciers. Kaiser, welcome back my friend! I can vouch that banks are having trouble filling cent orders. Is this a sign of retailers trying to stack up, or of collectors building hoards? And is it really the last year? If the annual sets sell out, I could see the Mint doing special collector sets for 2026. I hope you’re right about the shot in the arm, though.
It’s truly awesome to be back, my most excellent friend Major D, and right now the very best part of this is the warmth of the welcome I’m receiving; what a glorious feeling, and I thank you so very much for being such a “major” part of it! I guess my Johnson is THE biggest. I’ve got at least six unreadable things framed with two still in the tubes. Plus, the frames for my Johnson’s commendations are much nicer. So there, E 1!
Execrable One,
What a freakin’ joke you are. What you posted means doodly squat.
You sure are infatuated with D’s and Johnsons aren’t you?
If the 25th Anniversary Gold Sacagawea gets minted in proof, that would be the 19th precious metal proof order of the year and the first one added since January 1. Remember, the Royal Mint is doing a 2nd year of the L&B. It remains to be seen if the U.S. follows suit.
I do believe the Mint may be trying to break me in 2025.
I prefer 1oz gold coins, don’t know if I will buy the proposed Sacagawea 25th anniversary coin. I expect the Mint will produce less of the AGEs this year, both individual and the set, high price being the principal moderating factor. I participated in a Mint survey first of the week, appeared to be looking for the reason I limited my AGE purchases in 2024. I am beginning to think no matter how “rare” low mintage offerings end, future values will be largely equal to bullion.
Harry, don’t worry the mint will likely charge as much for the Sac Au as for A 1 Oz.
And absolutely right the rise in bullion value will extinguish non intrinsic value in the long run. E.g., low mintage Au wonders …
How about modifying the reverse of the Sacagawea one dollar coin for the 25th Anniversary and setting it apart from the others issued to date? I suggest the US Mint design team make the 17 stars slightly smaller and insert them between the letters making up, “ UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”. There just so happens to be exactly 17 spaces available between letters. The font could be reduced in size slightly as well, in addition to also sizing down “ONE DOLLAR”, in order to accommodate this alteration. They’d then have a little more room in the field to include either… Read more »
Cali good catch on the 17 spaces between letters. I like the way you’re thinking on this design.
Cali I’m with you on the edge incuse idea to keep those specs on the coin.
I do prefer 1oz like HarryB does, it would really pop the design imo. But I get it, they’re keeping with the original size & design intent. And I agree.
However, in keeping with Mint Capitalism at its finest, along with a Ryder/Ventris twist…May I introduce to all…
The Very Limited 2025 Sacagawea 1 oz “golden dollar”! Struck in High Relief and 9999 Gold, with a Special Privy mark on just 25 coins. Auctioned to the Public by none other than Stack’s Bowers!….
Did you know SB’s is merging with A-Mark Precious Metals? I believe they’ll still be using the SB’s name though.
Yes, SBG won’t change anything(on the surface), and the CEO of both firms, Greg Roberts, most likely played a role the merger?
Either way, A-Mark continues it’s status as a PM powerhouse, as Cali highlighted recently.
If it’s uncirculated, cool. If it’s proof, you’re killing me.
REB,
Do you keep a running tally of what you’ve invested in proof Au coins over the years? It’s none of my business, but it must be impressive to say the least. We all can feel your pain these last few years with the cost of these items. Cheers
I do keep a tally. Let’s just say it’s a sizeable investment. And yes, the current prices can induce indigestion. But, in retrospect, the prices in the 1980s and 1990s, which seem like peanuts now, felt the same way given my relative lack of means at that time.
Last year had to take the cake for you in new USM Gold proofs, shattering all prior years purchases!? Especially when one considers both of your ’24 FHG, and the L&B Gold(add on offerings?). Add up all of the Silver Proofs too? Wowser. I won’t even get into your 2025 “Unc” pursuits(for now!)…
Congrats to you for working your butt off to get to where you’re at today.
“Last year had to take the cake for you in new USM Gold proofs, shattering all prior years purchases!?”
Yes. I believe the confection’s frosting had a bit of flowing gold dolloped in for good measure. Needless to say, I’m somewhat apprehensive about what Mint-y surprises await me this Summer and Fall.
Well, technically there have been 9 years of Sacagawea Golden Dollars (2000-2008) and the rest Native American Dollars, but I often lump them all together as one series. I do like having the date and mint mark back on the obverse, instead of on the edge like with the NA$. And the W Mint for the gold will set it apart, with or without any changes to the stars. But still, a good idea, CaliSkier.
You’re killing me….I’ve been waiting since 2008 for a restrike of my reverse…exactly as it was done in 2000. Inknow the Native American reverses have been popular, but the original eagle was one of only 5 or so flying eagles that were produced for circulating coinage in the U,S. Mint’s history….TDR
Congratulations on a wonderful design Tom. I’m sure they’ll keep your Reverse.
I’m looking forward to hearing about some of your inside-the-Mint experiences!
Thanks for chiming in.
PS: I love the 1C Flying Eagle, even though I don’t have any…
“I’m looking forward to hearing about some of your inside-the-Mint experiences! Thanks for chiming in.”
I second that emotion. More war (or peace) stories, please.

Thanks, REB, for the link to Mr. Roger’s wikipedia page. This is an exceedingly talented man who figures quite large in US coinage history.
TDR, how honored and humbled I am, to have you chime in and congratulations, regarding your wonderful original design on the reverse of the 2000-2008 Sacagawea $1. Out of curiosity, had or did you ever consider placing the stars between the lettering as I suggested, when originally designing the reverse? Would you ever consider, redesigning/modifying your original reverse design in this manner and submitting as a design alteration for a one off design for the 25th Anniversary issue in gold? I realize you may not wish to answer or may be 100% opposed to any alteration, in any way, shape… Read more »
I love the South Carolina quarter design. Having lived in SC at the time of the quarter’s release, I remember it fondly. The coin was well-received and I kept more than a few specimens myself.
Would like to see one of these in my box of Cheerios.
@Rooster
I was thinking the same thing. I don’t care if it wasn’t gold if it would be the enhanced tail feather variety.

Rick, it could be bigger than just a few bucks. If that were met, Fishback suggests taking 20% of that, or $400 billion, and distributing it to taxpayers. If 2025 turns out to be the last year for the proof cent, 25RG could rival 20RG in demand and future resale value IMO. And if 2025 is the last year, it would be great if the Mint produced a reverse proof for the silver proof set (like it did for the W cent in 2019).
“if 2025 is the last year, it would be great if the Mint produced a reverse proof [cent] for the silver proof set”

Is the Mint going to release a sales report this week?
If you mean an actual update, I’d say highly doubtful. The last two reports released (ending Feb. 9 and Feb 16) were exactly the same numbers as the Feb 2 report. We can conjecture as to what’s happening at the Mint– but it isn’t normal. Maybe an update will come with the Feb 23 report when it gets released but who knows?
Thanks Major D. I’ve been watching things and the non-transparency make me wonder. Thank you for your kindly response. Have a great day.
