Last week, the United States Mint introduced its collection of 2025-W Proof American Gold Eagles. The annually issued gold pieces are available in four individual proof sizes, along with a four-coin set that includes all of them.
Released on March 20 with prices ranging from $430 to $7,182.50 – which have since been increased, the newest gold issues saw a combined 8,648 coins ordered within four days. This marks the lowest start in the series, with the early performance clearly impacted by higher coin prices as a result of gold reaching record highs.
By comparison, proof Gold Eagle products from 2024 recorded combined sales of 25,280 coins, while those from 2023 reached 36,274 coins and 2022 posted 54,222 coins, all within their respective four-day starting periods. Initial prices for the 2022 and 2023 proof Gold Eagles were identical and lower than those for 2024, while 2025 prices stand as the highest ever.

Elsewhere, sales retreated for the newly issued 2025 Proof Set. Released on March 4, the set opened with a six-day total of 211,757 sets. It climbed by 9,392 to reach 221,149 sets in its first full week of sales but most recently saw its total reduced by 13,918 to 207,231.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 540 numismatic products. The data revealed that 87 products outperformed their sales from the previous week, compared to 59 in the prior report. One product experienced a week-over-week increase of more than 1,000 units compared to 3 previously.
Additionally, two products recorded weekly sales declines – the previously mentioned 2025 Proof Set and the 2017-W $100 American Liberty Gold Coin, which dipped by one, compared to no products showing declines in the previous report.

Looks really bleak on the sales, hopefully the ASE privy and Marvel Comics will help in future sales. I fill the Innovation coins Michigan, Florida, and Texas will be a hit. Great images for 2025.
I wonder how the rest of the year’s slate will be affected by the loss of the Mint Director, the possible closing of the San Francisco Mint, the climbing costs of metals, and the tepid buying by Mint customers. I wouldn’t be surprised if multiple items get pulled from the release slate.
Question for the group – To stop production of an item, how far in advance does the Mint need to know about the cancellation? One week? One month? Three months? Six months?
REB: Major adjustments need to be applied. A lot of inventory sitting on shelves and the cost of the cent and nickel. But you do bring a good point… Answer to your question, the Mint pretty well calls their on shots. IMO they could remove items on a whem and say in their news letter we not produce. That’s that.
Hidden the workings of the mint are. But if I look back at history, the decision to discontinue striking fractional platinum eagles and fractional buffalo for 2009 was made the year before “… As a result of the numismatic product portfolio analysis.” Similarly the absence of the 2022 peace dollar because of the lack of planchets, tells me the time line for new coins is around a year. But those examples are from normal times and one might well say that we no longer live in normal times.

looking at the sales I see the 3 roll set of quarters for Roosevelt finished at 12678 and the product limit was 12620 so not bad they sold 58 more sets than they made.

USM mintage limits are now mere suggestions with little, if any, CREDIBILITY….FHG, etc. not to ever be believed, if the Mint says or promote$ something be careful….very careful we usually get skrewed

The Mint is currently under pressure from multiple directions which may help explain why what seemed to be erratic behavior before is now standard procedure.
At first I couldn’t comprehend why the least expensive and the most expensive AGEs were the two biggest sellers of the five options, but it’s really not that difficult to figure out. After all, it appears the deepest pocket buyers opt for the AGE Four Coin Set while those with far more limited means like to acquire the 1/10 ounce version of the AGE since it’s easily the most affordable. Three and a half years ago(9/21/21), Paul Gilkes wrote an article for Coin World titled: “U.S. Space Force silver medal likely a 2023 release in series”.(link below) The Space Force Silver Medal, has still yet to find a slot on the US Mint product schedule and looks unlikely to make an appearance this year. With next years 2026 Sestercentennal coins, Superhero Coins and medals, youth sport quarters, in addition to an overburdening, overwhelming, oversight by DOGE on the only Government agency, paying their own way, I don’t see this Medal taking flight for another couple years, if ever. I never imagined my financial resources would be under these sorts of pressures in my retirement. It galls me to no end to have to accept the realization that this administration simply doing nothing would have been infinitely preferable to the escalating perpetration of economic carnage we are witness to being inflicted on so many aspects of the nation’s welfare.
Only time will tell. I just hope it is a short time.
