No new numismatic products were released by the U.S. Mint last week, so collector favorites – proof coins and proof sets – saw the strongest sales gains. They accounted for seven of the eight most purchased products for the week ending April 6.
Leading them all was the 2025 Proof Set, up 3,020 to 211,633, building on the prior week’s gain of 1,382. The set still has ground to recover after a 13,918 drop in sales three weeks ago. Its current total reflects a little more than one month’s worth of sales since its March 4 release.
For comparison, last year’s 2024 Proof Set reached 198,528 in its first month. That set encountered early issues due to errors in its Certificates of Authenticity.

Flip a coin, “Cars or Coins”? Well cars it is! LOLRolling forward, LOL John Q! In the previous thread I’d alluded to loading up a semi trailer with gold between 1968-1985. In the PS I said: “That semi truck load, could buy a plethora of “Red Books” or a whole lot of(E1 cue up the music! LOL) “Little Red Corvettes”! “Baby, you’re much too fast….” PSS Bonus what’s special about the car below?” I then attached a picture of a pink vintage car that happened to be a 1964 Mercury Monterey Marauder vs the 1964 Mercury Montclair Marauder I’d intended.… Read more »
Mercury Marauder I know cars pretty good, but that is before my time, was the Falcon the Ford equivalent?. My dad had a 1973 Chevy Impala w a 424 that when he sold it a lot of guys wanted it. David Lindley el Rayo ex & Mercury’s the answer is….. pretty low production for that Mercury I had a 1977 Mercury Capri made in W Germany, been looking for one but they are crazy hard to find forghettaboutit the PARTS… GOLD CALI EXPLODING….LCS pays spot -5% oh the humanity some here would say. My Uncle had a 3 speed red Falcon which was a literal blast to drive. If they had the balls to manufacture one today, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. I only drove the Falcon a couple of times, but it and I became one…just like Harry and his wand! LoL
“Cars or Coins”
Seems like no matter which bright new shinny thing I buy, it looses value the moment I take possession. Some of us are natural born loosers and never make the choice that will have lasting value, so just have to be happy with the purchases for its value to me.
AND…. Now back to our regularly scheduled Coin News programming…LOL Hmmm….ponder? What would this mean to us? I know many collect Classics and could care less about moderns, however you might want to take a peak at this piece from Paul Gilkes over at Coin World. “DOGE looking into potential changes in Mint operations” YIKES! He writes: “Since the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was created, 300 positions have been trimmed from the United States Mint payroll, with efforts to trim 300 more. The Numismatic Product Division is being targeted for complete elimination, with revenue to be redirected from the… Read more »
DOGE has arranged for Musk to buy all the gold held by the now shuttered numismatic division (est. 2.5M Oz.) for himself at a rate of $100 an Oz. Up from us govt $48 evaluation, a win win.
Cag has never claimed to be a ‘collector’
Now, THAT’S funny!!!!!
Cali, could the possible elimination of the Numismatic Product Division only impact (end) sales of “numismatic products,” and not sales of “bullion and related precious metals coins” and “commemorative coins”??
Rich, as Scotty said, it ain’t so.
I wouldn’t put much stock into what Coin World, and more specifically what Paul Gilkes has to say about the current ongoings at the Mint.
Coin World, and Mr Gilkes were once considered to be a reputable, reliable, and neutral source for anything Numismatic. Not anymore.
CW is spiraling down, and on the verge of Bankruptcy, and Mr Gilkes is just one of the many contributors for CW’s self inflicted downfall.
Below, is a quote from someone that I do find to be reputable, reliable, and neutral. He used to work at CW…
“For the last few months, Coin World has been reprinting my old columns. I stopped submitting new material in November after they fell 4 1/2 months behind in paying me. So, after 16 years of uninterrupted productivity, it looks like I may need to find a new writing or consulting gig. I’m open to any offers or suggestions. — Mike Diamond”
Rick, did you happen to contact or relay to Mike Diamond, he’d find a welcome home, possibly here at Coin News? Mike Unser, any room on the team, for a “Major League Error Player”? Haha… Major League “Error” Player, I crack myself up! For any unfamiliar with Mike Diamond and those who’d like to know more, Mike said about himself: “Well, I’m semi-retired now. I work as a freelance writer. I write for Coin World. I used to be a teacher, teaching biological anthropology and cultural anthropology. Before that I taught human gross anatomy and other courses necessary for basic health… Read more »

Biological Anthropology the hardest course I ever took. The book was like Valium. With the Extra V in the RedBook a lot of folks here are feeling pretty good. Congratulations
When Outdoor Photographer magazine collapsed, I also read about about them owing their columnist back pay.
Rick, Rich and CaliSkier,
Depending on whose outside account we lend credibility to, the U.S. Mint’s Numismatic Product Division is either on the verge of extinction or will forge ahead with many years of varied coin production down the road.
The one thing we can count on is that the Mint won’t under any imaginable circumstances be outsourcing any of its operations to mainland China.
Hypothetical results:
Disaster for anyone building a collection, wholesalers, dealers, and flippers.
Bonanza for those with large collections and dealers with extensive inventory.
Just speculating, but I see nothing but $$$ for the Classic Coin Sector. No more market competition for the Classics. Yet, I won’t celebrate until the DOGE Deed is done. I am sure that some products will remain (i.e. Uncirculated Mint Sets, Proof Sets, and Bullion). Additionally, I would not like to see the Liberty Series go away. But there is a heck of a lot of worthless crap that can go. I think we need more concrete specifics on the matter.

Update from Paul Gilkes over on Coin News in an article titled: “Planchet supply is enough to keep the cent in production”(April 9, 2025) Paul states that: “The unstruck planchets are also sufficient for striking Uncirculated Lincolns cents at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints for inclusion in 2025 Uncirculated Mint sets and for Proof sets executed at the San Francisco Mint.” You might want to subscribe for a 2025 Uncirculated Set or two, as this could potentially be it(?) for annual sets, as we know it, across the board. Also, with the 2024 Silver Proof sets at 169,876 and an… Read more »
Silly me … I thought my collection would outlive me. Maybe that’s not the case. Looks like my hobby may perish before I do. On the bright side, I won’t miss those high noon scrums in the waiting room with the hackers, scalpers, and flippers. So, I guess there’s that.
REB,
I love how your philosophical “So, I guess there’s that” reminded me of the wisdom of Bill Murray as the delightfully peculiar groundskeeper in “Caddy Shack”!
CaliSkier,
I suppose it might have been just a tad unrealistic to think that with the big changes now in motion in so many areas of finance in particular and the economy in general that somehow the specialized field of numismatics and its relation to the workings of the US Mint would somehow be able to remain untouched and unscathed.
Back in February, I joke about the USM selling bags and rolls of unstruck penny planchets. I guess that is not happening.
Rick may have a point about Coin World, however as far as throwing Paul Gilkes under the bus, for his employers misgivings is a little premature for my liking. It’s not like he shut down Mint News Blog without making any attempts to communicate, as someone else I won’t mention. At least we had the courtesy of Michael Alexander(writer), to give us at least the courtesy of some form of communication, prior to MNB going dark after 13 years of developing enough of a solid foundation to warrant being bought up by one of the “players”. Still don’t quite understand… Read more »
Cali, My comments about Gilkes can be taken with your famous hunk of salt if you like, no offense to you as a CW reader. I basically published an opinion piece above anyway, much like Paul has been doing the last few days on his site, as opposed to a professional, politically neutral article imo, as one might expect from a ‘Senior Editor’ on a coin site? Not Paul, he’s got an obvious beef with MAGA & DOGE, and now the Mint too it seems? Oh well, he can opine, and mis-inform away, as those three subjects are a hot,… Read more »
I’ve been getting CW emails for the last 15 years, usually the ‘Monday Morning Brief’, and some other stuff that I browse. I hope that CW comes out of their worm-hole, and can once again be a top-tier Numismatic site. One of the things that I think that they could improve upon, is to get a tad more fresh and up to date material. Some of their stuff, similar to our hosts here, has content that is copy/pasted from one of the more popular, modernized Numi sites, such as CDN/Grey/Whitman….
Rick, started w Coin World in 1968 pulling one out of my neighbors trash can. Bought 1968s proof sets for $5 each, excited the return of proofs! Fast forward Ryder and Ventris killed any mint desires. I think CW fell apart when it when corporate. Another magazine is Numismatic News which is still about.
I used to get Numismatic News. How is it doing now?

Ah, “Sister Golden Hair”. America’s second #1 and possibly their best song. It certainly beats the crap out of their one-cord signature hit, “Horse with no Name”.
Saw this tidbit from ACCESS Newswire on my business news feed today, thought it warranted mention here: Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has signed Senate Bill 130 into law, reaffirming Gold and Silver as legal tender. The Alabama Legal Tender Act recognizes “any refined Gold or Silver bullion, specie, or coin that has been stamped, marked, or imprinted with it’s weight and purity” as legal tender in the Yellowhammer state. The law ensures that no one is obligated to accept Gold and Silver for transactions unless specified by contract or required by law. The measure, backed by Money Metals Exchange and… Read more »
I could sign on to your congressional pay legislation, Jeff. And how about a MAXIMUM wage? No corporate officer can receive more than fifty times the average compensation of the bottom quartile of employees. I bet then the hardest-working Americans would finally get a liveable wage.
P.S. – The Alabama “law” does appear pointless. But what should one expect? Miss Governor Kay doesn’t strike me as a Huntsville rocket scientist.
I’ll go for both of those. A liveable wage is at the core of a functioning economy.
