Either the Mint is sure it’s still going to be in the business of making numismatic coinage in 2027 or its impersonation of an oblivious ostrich has achieved perfection.
That song never gets old E1…
Rick,
Yes, Timeless.
Cheers
“GTG” 2.0. Guess The Grade, a 1968-D 50C coin. Cali, I can’t recall exactly what I said about the coin before, other than it is the mildest toner in my ’64-’70 8-coin 50C Silver Short Set. Also, that the scratch above the left wing is on the plastic holder, not the coin. “GTG” is like squeezing blood from a turnip around here. Also, the coin was holdered and graded 10 years ago, according to the PCGS museum of holder types. It is not an MS66, so there’s your clue. Guess The Grade, give me *two guesses, and I’ll reveal the… Read more »
That has to be a 67 or 68. I do not see many bag marks on either side.
E1: to dip, or to not dip…
I picked up my first ever Franklin Proof coin. I bought an old crusty original 1953 Proof Set in OGP, a tiny box with tissue protecting the set. 1C to 50C, 5 Proof coins.
The original “celo” coin pouches are faded and failing. Very brittle, cracked & not sealed anymore. The coins are in very good shape though, considering their age, storage, and exposure situation. The nickel is the finest, flawless. The Benji has minimal tone & haze, and the Lincoln has a couple of ‘copper-spot’ type toning going on….
Now what?
The set was more or less sight unseen for the buy, a very limited view, similar to a ‘Storage Wars’ auction in a way? So did my Cameo gamble pay off? Not likely, but I’ll need to take a closer look at all of the coins in the open air. The Franklin Reverse looks like it could CAM(maybe), but only one side with CAM does not count, so good luck with that!?
To dip & grade?..To dip & re-Mylar flip them?…Or leave it be?
That is the question…Any tips?…..
Rick, I would have to see that set firsthand to make a call on it. But the cameo dance with those early proof Franklins can be a difficult one. Yes, both sides must be solid cameo to get the designation and the fields or the mirrors on both sides must be full as well. After the Franklin Half,” the next money coin will be the Lincoln Cent. Also, if any of the other coins look to grade “PR68” or better, those can be money coins also. Since the mint only produced 128K of those sets, it may be worth it… Read more »
Rick,
If you are moving towards Cameo Franklins; you may want to give special consideration to this book. I’ve owned this book for almost 30 years now and I’ve used it many times. Tomaska was early for his time. But his intricate research back in the day is starting to prove its worth. So, Cameo Franklins are rare and the Ultra Cameo Franklins are very scarce. Also, Proof Cameo Walkers and Proof Cameo Barber Halfs too.
Cheers
E1, Thanks Buddy, the OGP ’53 PF set was more of an impulse buy, and has a nostalgic vibe to it. When looking at the mid to upper grades in CAM(like your coin), the valuation is strong. I’ll let it sit for a bit, no hurry on what’s next for the set. I’m not really pursuing Proof/Cameo halfs at this time, but they sure are enticing and pretty. I’m still on the lookout for a ’64 Accented Hair in CAM/DCAM, same with a nice & clean ’76-S Silver DCAM Half. The MS-Silver Kennedy’s are keeping me occupied for now, and… Read more »
Rick,
Tomasaka has been around for a long long time. I had purchased a number of coins from him back in the 90’s. You will always get a first class problem free coin from him, but you will pay top dollar. I used to chat it up over the phone with his brother Gary about conservation. I got a lot of good information from Gary back in the day. Now I don’t know where he is.
“You will always get a first class problem free coin from him, but you will pay top dollar.”
If the former is the case, E 1, then the latter is certainly worth it.
This time I actually get the reference.
“GTG”, 1968-D 50C PCGS MS67.
Cali, Sharks2th, JQ,
Thanks for your input, and a job well done.
I did mention this coin and its grade before, but that was weeks ago.
It’s not quite there as far as the crackled & tarnished variety that I’m after, but it’ll do just fine for now as it hangs with the MS67 gang of 5(lower left)…
Cool. I didn’t see many marks on that one. It’s really nice.
You may want to put that proof set into intercept shield holders with the ring to protect them from tarnishing if the cello is falling apart. You could also put the entire cello into an intercept bag used for jewelry. The bags come in different sizes. There are occasional problems with the zip lock on the bags separating.
True Shark, not much going on in the bag mark dept at all. There is a couple of them on the back, and the one on the front as JQ described as a shaving nick.
There’s some rub & slight chatter on the usual high spots, and an abrasion in front of his face, but very mild. I think it just eked out the 67. There are 80 coins in an MS67, and just 7 coins in a 67+, and I’m on the hunt for one of those. We’ll see…
Rick,
I’m waiting to see what you do with the 1964-D. All of those double, triple, and quad dies to choose from. Or will you go with a normal die. Only one normal die strike in PCGS MS-68 for the 1964-D.
Price Guide
Thanks E1,
I’ve been looking at the std die coins of the ’64-D, solely based upon the number of higher grade coins that hit the market occasionally, more selection, as the TPG chart shows. I’m on the hunt for the MS-67’s if possible. With the very limited numbers of DDO’s, etc, finding one in 67 looks to be a challenge. However, I’m totally open to buy an MS-65-66 DDO if the coin fit’s the bill, and if it ‘speaks’ to me lol…
Speaking of which…
I recently picked up this ’64-D MS-66+ (below) to jump-in with my toner set. It was a good price, and below retail, but…
After seeing it in hand, I had realized that it had ‘whispered’ to me to buy, not ‘speak’ to me…
It’s a decent coin I think, but it has just a little too much spotty brown/tan “Russet” Toning going on, as REB knows what I mean. A bit more rainbow might help?
So, for the time being, I do have a ’64-D in 6+, but it’s days are numbered? Not sure yet. We’ll see…
