Gold Hot in Heritage’s May 2008 Long Beach $26.5 Million Auction

Dallas, TX. Top prices realized of $161,000 were reached by two very different coins in Heritage Auction Galleries' May 28-30, 2008 Signature® in Long Beach: a 1794 Dollar VF30 PCGS (Lot 800) and an 1891-O 25C Specimen MS65 NGC (Lot 334). Total prices realized for the American coins exceeded $19 million and ancient and world coins realized an additional $7.5 million; both totals will rise further when post auction buys are finalized. 

Heritage Long Beach Auction Coins, Highlights and Prices Realized

 

"The strong market is continuing to bring great rarities onto the Heritage auction block," commented Heritage President Greg Rohan.

"One of the pair of 1794 silver dollars realized $161,000, matched by an 1891-O quarter, certified Specimen 65 by NGC.

One of the three Continental dollars included realized $92,000. Altogether, more than 650 consignors and more than 5,000 bidders participated in our May Long Beach auctions."

Arizona State Quarters Roll into Circulation with State Quarter Ceremony

Arizona state quarter coin (uncirculated)Arizona quarters were launched into circulation yesterday with the United States Mint release ceremony on the lawn of the state Capital in Phoenix.

The ceremony was full of local excitement with a Mariachi band playing, free mint ice-cream drumsticks and free Arizona quarters for everyone 18 and under. Earlier, United States Mint Director Ed Moy commented,

 

"Children make up a good portion of the 147 million Americans plugging the coins into their commemorative folios or folders. This has educated a whole generation of Americans in geography and history."

 

The Arizona state quarter is strikingly attractive with its Grand Canyon and saguaro cactus design theme. Over 4,200 quarter design suggestions from across the state were sent to the 24-member Arizona State Quarter Commission appointed by Governor Janet Napolitano.

Disabled Veterans Silver Dollar Commemorative Coins Likely

Coin Legislation on Capital BuildingCommemorative coins honoring disabled American veterans are almost assured with recent action in the Senate.

House bill H.R. 634, titled American Veterans Disabled for Life Commemorative Coin Act, calls for a total of 350,000 silver dollar proof and uncirculated coins in 2010.

The bill easily passed in May of 2007 by a House vote of 416 to 0. It was quickly moved into the Senate for consideration, but in typical legislative fashion it settled soundly in committee awaiting either complete and forever forgetfulness, or action. Action won-over on May 20.
